Real Life at the Riley House ...

How I really live...
I spent 98% of my time in the kitchen and family room, or on the back porch painting. At first, I got the futon so that I could watch TV without the dogs crowding me off the couch. They are like velcro- always attaching themselves to me. These days, I even sleep here. Why not? I live by myself and it is easier to fall asleep with the 'white noise' of the TV in the background, and I have no TV in my bedroom.

Between my junk and dog toys everywhere, these rooms usually do not look this good. They are usually much more cluttered. I cleaned them up for the appraiser last week and they look fairly decent now, but that will not last long. My kitchen table will soon again be burried under paperwork (USCG Auxiliary stuff)

I once collected clocks. I have one that is over 400 years old and has a single hand. That is why I have more than one cuckoo clock on my walls. I ought to make a list of things that are valuable to seperate them from the normal household stuff. When my son settles my estate, I would hate for him to donate stuff is is worth something to the Goodwill and miss out. Awful thing to think about! I don't even have a Will because I'd prefer not to think about it.

Very pretty chairs and wood furniture, I like that sort. And if you don't want to think about wills it's really good to have a notebook of your good items listed with approx values (dated) for insurance. There are so many weather-related things that happen.

I can understand the sense of loneliness. I would feel the same person. I am such a "people" person that I struggle with being alone. I need to have people around.
Have you thought about the possibility of having a roommate like on Golden Girls? Not that I am saying you are a "golden" girl, but they had a nice set up with a group of people who became close friends by being roommates?

To tell you the truth, yes, I have. I had a roommate (a woman) for years and was quite content. Unfortunately, not very many women are looking for a place to live. Women are nest buildres. It is usually men looking for someplace to ...squat.

I know what you mean about identifying the valuable things for the heirs. I told Mr. YouKnow to somehow mark his things without turning it into a giant project and he needs to come up with a code so it doesn't end up making it easy for the burglars to zero in on the high dollar items to the extent there are any. And then we have to remember the code.

I went through all of the old family photographs and ID'd everyone by name and dates that they lived. Now, I need to go room by room and ID the things that should go to auction rather than the Goodwill.

As my grandmother used to say, your house looks "lived in". No shame in that. Thanks for the memories.

I like living here! It is home although it is a lot of work.

I think it looks like a wonderful home. You're not selling it, are you?

My goal was to refinance, but the property values have dropped so much that I am unable to do that right now. The appraisal was a real shock!

Dottie, it is so nice to have a dining room and I think the younger generation has missed out because when you sit down together to eat the
conversation is always better and people share more. We noticed that when
Ellie was gone and the children and Ted and I sat down to the table with
them.

Both the kitchen and the dining room were once used frequently. Lots of friends. Lots of company- many dinners and much laughter filled these rooms. What have I done? Why am I such a hermit now?

I think you should rethink the will - something about estate taxes if you don't have one? Just find out a little more about it all just in case...

I think you are right about the Will- especially in Florida. Ok, I will get to it!

That is the way we liked it.

I let these rooms get so cluttered! I should be embarrased by how cluttered it gets, but geez! No one sees it but me!

The pictures of your home make it seem so cozy. It must be so nice living there.

It felt much warmer when I did not live here by myself. I am lonely- and I do not refer to romantic relationships. It would feel more like a home again if someone lived here with me.
