Harvest

It's going to freeze Wednesday night.

Picked all my squash last week - zucchini, mini pumpkins and spaghetti squash. Had a few light frosts that killed the outer leaves of all the squash plants. Have more small zucchini to pick. Got 6 monster zucchini. I used 3 to can "mock pineapple", gave one away, and have two left...

Tonight, DS helped me pick the corn. Then he took some corn stalks to fight with. He's really working them over (rolleyes). I've never had corn fill out this well before! I usually eat them as baby corn. Got around 30 cobs.

DS also helped me pick half of the tomatoes. Got a bin full of green tomatoes, maybe 20lbs.

Tomorrow, I pick all zucchini, all tomatoes, all little hot peppers, and all herbs that I want to dry. And blanch and freeze all the corn...

Still have carrots and potatoes to dig. And some onions. Going to give away most of my beets to my neighbour - no one really eats them here. I planted them for the early greens and the greens are too tough to eat now.

Peas and beans are done. Still have some snow peas and more swiss chard than a roomful of people could eat.

Wow! Your garden did well. That corn looks perfect.

It was a cool wet summer, but the garden did surprisingly well! I counted the corn - 52 cobs! Not all perfect, they didn't fill out right to the ends.

A groundhog got most of our harvest, including every single cob of corn and every pumpkin.I hate wildlife.

Damn groundhog! It's the slugs that did the most damage in my garden. Everything leafy has holes in it.

I know the warm feeling of a successful harvest. Congrats!

More like a weary why-did-I-plant-all-this-stuff feeling.

I love beets. Have you ever had the golden variety? They are so different!

I grew yellow ones a few years back. Still have a few jars of them left. Beets freeze better than they can. I've also planted the Chiogga (sp?), the Italian red/white striped beet. They are pretty.

Your garden did really well this year. Beet greens are so good! I can see why you'd raise beets just for the greens and then give the big ones away. I've never tried roasted beets, but some of the Las Vegas restaurants serve tossed salads with diced roasted beets in them.

I'll keep just a few beets for myself, and for salads. They are good raw in salads - thin strips made with a peeler.

WOW! You did really well with your garden. I'm picturing that corn with butter oozing between the kernels. I love beets but they can be a bit messy.

Now I'm paying for how well it did by having to harvest and try to preserve everything! I'm tired and the dirt never comes off my hands and my basement has herbs hanging from the ceiling and squash, onions, garlic and tomatoes on the floor.

I'm tired from all the work you did!!! But you're slipping--I didn't read anything about your going out for a run!!!

Okay then, here you go... I was going to go for a long run this afternoon, but decided I had better stay home and make vegetable chili and blanch and freeze all the corn instead.
