Color My World: Flowered!

We've already had a hard frost this year! I even had to turn on the furnace yesterday so that I could stand to take a shower. With the cold weather, we got lots of cloudy days and I felt like I wanted something colorful and summery to cheer me up. While looking through some of my photos of my gardens, etc. I thought I'd use them.

Early this Summer, a friend invited me to visit for a little R & R. I went for a long weekend and on Saturday we went to a local nursery. I spied a "blackberry lily" which was new to me and decided to try it out. I'm glad I did! It's not really winter hardy in my zone so I'll have to mulch it and protect it well. The flowers were such a vivid lemony yellow, they could brighten up the whole yard by themselves. Each flower only lives for one day, then they close tightly and twist themselves up. Now those spirals are opening and popping out some seeds! I expect to have a bumper crop nest year.

This is an oak leaf hydrangea. The flowers start out a cream color and slowly turn to pink and then red as they age.

I took these in the spring with my cell phone. They grow among the ground cover in a garden nook of the nearby cemetery. I have no idea what these are but I thought they were pretty.

And last, I have a couple of fall flowers to show off. The short grass with the purple flowers is liriope or Big Blue Lily Turf. Then, there are some sedum, and an anemone blossom.

Umm-hmmm, some people call it Big Blue Lily Turf. We call it Monkey Grass. I ain't got no reason to kill plants, it just happens.

Thanks for the lovely flowers as Autumn creeps in. That yellow is stunning. I've never seen Sedum that bright before. It's beautiful!

Just a reminder to rose growers - Add some mild fertilizer to the mulch around your roses. they will eat it all Winter and in Spring you will see the difference!

Winter hasn't set in yet and I'm ready for spring. This part of fall is still nice, 50s and 60s during the day which is fine for splitting wood, but I know what's coming. The higher elevations (2500+) were already promised snow a time or two, but they haven't gotten it yet!
