I Survived!

Whew, I am so glad to be home. I am a firm believer that if I dress and act professionally, the students will reciprocate. I wore a gray suit today and black heels; my feet are killing me! I took my shoes off as soon as I got through the door and began to strip off my clothes immediately there after. The pain and discomfort were worth it, however, since the students treated me with respect. There was an incident atschool. At the beginning of first hour, I had such terrible cursing and screaming. One of the problem students was having a fit, rammed his fist through the wall, and was being very abusive to teachers and another student. I had his sister in my room. She flew from my room going to the aid of her brother; more screaming and cursing ensued. She shoved the young man whom her brother was cursing and threatened to fist him right in the kisser--my words, not hers! I grabbed her arm, she shook and tried to disengage my hold, but I held on like a snapping turtle! Other teachers arrived to give me aid which was completely unnecessary. Both students left school but no disciplinary action was given by the administration. The remainder of the day went smoothly, and the students were delightful. On the way home, I again saw the turtles sitting on the log, not as many today as yesterday but several. They were the sentinels protecting their domain. The mallard were darting around in the water enjoying the 75 degree weather. They looked so adorable.Well, I must get the food on the table. Hubby is home and his tummy is growling! See you all later if I don't pass out in the recliner!

I have such great respect for teachers-- they have one of the toughest jobs on earth. Teachers should get hazardous duty pay!

No discipline? What's up with that? No wonder the schools are falling to pieces, the expectations are set way too low!

As someone said up there... well, down there once this is posted... teachers don't make enough money... especially subs!!! I know some of them tend to test you, but this was more. And, the admins did nothing?? No wonder the kids think they can do things like this!!

Wow... that's quite the drama! Glad you made it through the day unscathed.

What--after such an uneventful day yesterday, you don't want to return to the classroom today? Some kind of wuss?(Sandwich for hubby's supper?)

Teachers don't make enough money for all they put up with..You must have the patience of a saint. Hope your day is better today

Sigh...unfortunately, what you described happens a lot more than people care to admit. Being a teacher is much more difficult these days and the pay that they receive is ridiculous when it comes down to what teachers really do.

First of all, what a great "about me."
I can understand the girl rallying to her brother's defense. *Not* that I'm saying it is acceptable behavior at all, but....I'm glad you weren't roughed up during the skirmish.

Angie, they made us take a two week course as part of our inservice training on Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (how to restrain violent students without inflicting pain, to secure their safety as well as the safety of other). We were also certified in Love and Logic. Love and Logic works with about 85% of my kiddoes but that emotionally disturbed 15% wears my rear out!!! I am more of a hippie librarian and get away with my hippie look because the principal I work under lets us violate the dress code as long as the scores are high. I hope things work out for you and remember to document, document, document...but you are a veteran, you know how it goes! Keep us posted on your next round!

Did you ever think the turtles might have been waiting to see you?

Sounds like a stressful day! Enjoy the recliner!!

I was just wondering how your day went! Good to know you survived. I knew you would! What I don't understand is why those disruptive kids weren't disciplined.... Doesn't seem like they have to pay much of a consequence for their bad behavior, and doesn't that mean it is likely to just happen again and again?

I know exactly how you feel!
