My friend lived outside of society for fourteen years. She really did literally in a shack right outside city limits. She likes to call it "The Little Shit House on The Prairie". It was right on a creek and they had no running water ie. no bathroom and no electricity.
Now you know my mother grew up in a home similar to this on the reservation during the fifties, but my friend endured this during the eighties.
It all started with dating a wild man who happen to get her pregnant. She married him. He was a extremest and wanted to live outside of the evils of society. He made her quit smoking and adhere to a strict vegetarian diet. She grew most of what the family ate and milked the same goat for twelve years.
She birthed all three of her kids at home and raised them in this one room shack. Needless to say her and her family were the talk of the town. People would drive by and slow way down to take a peek at these strange people living outside with all these kids running around.
The school thought this was a strange situation and sent over CPS. The social workers that showed up admired the shack and could not believe how clean and innovative the little dwelling really was. Soon tons of parents from the baseball team she and her husband coached were dropping off their kids every weekend. It was wonderland for a child. There were goats and critters on the creek to chase.
It sounds like a fairy tale, no? Well there was another side going on. Her husband was hooked on cocaine. He would sell cocaine and party down, while she raised the kids at the shack.
She says she preferred this man to just be gone. She said he was nuts and just made life hard. He had put the family on a strict diet that barred all sugar and caffeine. One day he came walking down the road enjoying a chocolate bar. She felt cheated and lied to.Here her and the kids are living off of the land and he is having a snickers. She had to cook all the meals outside. She told me once some hippies came to crash at the shack and she cooked a meal for everyone. One guy told her "Please do not ever offer me food again." So you know that meals were not the tastiest.
She began to feel helpless and trapped. One day a woman pulled up to the shack and told her "God told me to give you this car." My friend accepted the kind offer and packed up all the children and began her journey back into civilization.
