Baby Hummingbird

This might be a baby hummingbird with a few juvenile feathers left. They don't get much time to be babies because they have to learn to fly like little helicopters right away. It could also be an adult that had a rough migration from the south because when they are cold, they will fluff out like this, but it's not cold right now.

He's the roughest looking hummer I've ever seen - the breeze shows skin between gaps in the feathers and all.

Thanks, I have so many, I've started deleting some, but it's like being at the eye doctor to pick the best of two very similar shots: A or B? Could I see them again please?

One of the Rufus H-birds could have attacked it.

The Rufous, those feisty little buggers, should arrive around July 4th and stay about 4 weeks. A month of chaos for all.

Do you suppose he has a neurosis? Just kidding! He could have had a
rough flight home.

It might have been a rough commute, but now we've seen some more birds that look and act different, and have decided they are babies.

first ones i have seen stationary ---that feeder is a good one
comment by kevinshere on May 18, 2013 10:31 PM ()
These feeders are really good. For one thing, they hold 10 birds, and when there are territorial ones, they can be on opposite sides eating and not get all upset.

I get buzzed by a hummingbird every other day or so... they're so aggressive.
comment by steeve on May 18, 2013 8:05 PM ()
Especially if you have red on, they'll come check you out. They are fairly tame, and will come up to us in the woods.

nice pics. I had robins in my garage but they disappeared five days after they hatched. Won't get to see this batch learn to fly.

Robins really seem to leave the nest quickly - about the time you think you'll be able to get a picture, they are out following mama around. We think it was them who built a really nice nest on top of a metal extension ladder. Don't know if they will use it now.

So glad they found their way to you and your welcome feeder.

We don't have as many as usual for this time of year, and makes me wonder
all that rain and flooding in San Antonio is going to affect their migration.

He could be a feather picker!
comment by greatmartin on May 18, 2013 12:47 PM ()
We were watching to see if the other birds were aggressive towards him, but they're not chickens, they seem to leave the weaker ones alone.
