Back When in the Blog

Tonight I'm looking at old blogs on this site. There used to be so many of us, and I recognize about 20% of the names. It's interesting to explore from different directions, clicking on various Channels to see what got classified as "Life and Events, Boring" for example. And then following one name to see what they posted about.

Most of them haven't posted here in years, but once in awhile one of them pops in and marvels at how empty it is. I admit that I don't blog regularly, have not help up my end of the bargain, and I am not sure that I will do any better going forward.

In the meantime, I am copy/pasting what Jeri wrote over the years into a big master document that is a combo of letters she wrote me and what she posted on the blog for all of us to see. The two are complimentary.

I'm also looking at what I posted at various times as troutbend, kitchentales, and traveltales. Troutbend was supposed to write about life here in Colorado. Kitchentales was supposed to post recipes, and Traveltales was supposed to post about life in Las Vegas when we were staying in hotels all the time. At one point, Jeri was having trouble with the platform and not seeing my messages so I had to switch to logging in as traveltales all the time. This caused some confusion because other users were still sending me messages on Troutbend etc.

Some of the things I wrote years ago are so interesting to me now, I am pasting them into a Word doc in case this platform disappears some day. I owe Eddie a huge debt of gratitude for keeping it going all these years. We've built strong friendships, but as we saw with Jeri, they only endure as long as each of us is able to log in. Lose that, and our friend is gone forever.

Martin's post reminded me of Jeri's posts about her youth. I seem to recall her mentioning picking cotton, putting buttermilk on her skin, and working very hard. What people did all day in the past is always interesting to me.

I'm working through the 15 years of messages Jeri wrote me, coding it to create an index. When the index is compiled, all those memories of her growing up are together, and just reading the index is a narrative. Most of the time she'd make a passing remark that I tag, but once in awhile she goes into detail, and the tag is: Must Read so I hope her family takes the time to go to that part of the book.

I rarely find time to write more than a line on fb. Looking back on old content isn't likely to happen. There aren't enough hours in the evening even to watch all the youtube videos channels I subscribe to. I did scroll the pages of my account looking for a particular post now and again. One time it was for "The Cat Test". I think some of the others were "The Purina Diet", and something more serious that I have forgotten. I think it was about we me and Donna went on our first date with a stop at the hospital first where I had a colonoscopy before Chinese.

I was looking at what I posted many years ago, and what a blabbermouth I was! As the years went by, I'd start a post and then decide it was too much trouble to go into the back story, which seemed necessary so as to not bring up a bunch of superficial well-meant advice in the form of comments. So I posted less and less.

Hey there! It seems like everyone here misses Jeri.

I saw an article today about how the phrases that people use indicates how resilient they are. All of the examples given were something Jeri expressed at one time or other over the years.

One of them: “I still have things to be grateful for.”
We’re hardwired to notice threats to our well-being. But people who are resilient find a way to turn towards the positive, even in times of difficulty.
Similar phrase: “I may be struggling, but I can find a way to be thankful for the good things in my life.”

I was going to do a post about that, including some of her Jeri-isms, but got sidetracked looking at what the various bloggers commented on her posts, especially back in 2008 - 2009 when there was more of us. This is how she'd end every comment:

I love reading old posts--sort of like reading old diary entries!

It's interesting to see how much we tell our fellow bloggers over the years, and nice to have people who know us and accept our quirks and let us rant once in awhile.
