Scolded by the Doctor

Today was the big day when I got to go see my GI doctor. As many of you know, I get to go every six months because I am being treated for fatty liver disease, which is basically just the formation of fat deposits within the liver. For me, it is caused by my weight and cholesterol issues. I actually like my doctor quite a bit. He is honest, and I know I can talk to him about any concerns I might have.

I have to go for bloodwork before each of my visits, and, generally, my weight is a pretty good indicator of what is going on with my liver. As the weight goes up, so does my cholesterol and my liver enzymes. Neither is a good thing over the long haul.

I was actually doing well getting my weight back under control again up until Ray's foot surgery. I had gotten down to about 185 lbs and it was still working its way down. The problem was that I had to pretty much stop my bike ride for about 2 months. The morning routine shifted and had to be dedicated to changing his (and for a while Jolie's) bandages. It is not really good to blame that situation, but I just didn't have it in me to set exercise time aside. On a bright note, I have gotten back into that routine.

The doctor was actually pretty cool, though. He started by congratulating Ray and I on our civil union ceremony, and he said that he understood my predicament. He said, one really good thing is that while my cholesterol had climbed a bit, my liver enzymes had remained steady. He wants me to get back into the routine, and he will be happy.

On another front, in the health care arena, Ray was thrilled with our stop into the pharmacy this past weekend. He had to refill his insulin (Humulin 70/30) for the first time since he was put on my insurance. He was thrilled to see the result of his new discount with a copay rather than paying for it totally out of pocket.

Only 2 more days at my current job and 6 before I start my new job.

My curiosity is getting the best of me! I can't wait to dive in. I will definitely miss the people at my current/former job, though. I had so many wonderful coworkers and patrons.

A really smart doctor knows how to let you know that you can do better but still leave you feeling encouraged. Otherwise, you'll just feel like what's the use. Bless his heart!

I really do like Dr Joe, as well as my primary care physician. Both are really great guys who I feel totally relaxed with. I know I can trust them.

Clock watcher!!!!

It's good when you have a doctor you can talk to--that's why I like my primary--also I have learned to change doctors if I don['t feel a 'connection'--as you get older THAT gets more important but it will be interesting to see how much keeping records will change in the medical field and doctors having more access saving money and time!
Get on that bike!

That is true about how things might improve (hopefully) with technology providingthem with more time. I had a doctor in which I had a really bad connection, and I think he turned me into a hypochondriac for a while. I think it is so important to be able to talk freely with your doctor and ask whatever questions you need.
