Here’s a heads up regarding on-line web sites that offer free samples, and they only need your credit card no. for the postage. Although I should know better,I wasn't thinking when I sent for a free tape that would help people stop smoking. Ed, the heart patient, is smoking again.
When I got my Visa bill, I noticed a charge of $84 and change for this tape. I called the outfit and learn I am on a monthly subscription for a tape each month for this amount. They could cancel the item not yet shipped, but I was liable for the first charge because I hadn’t canceled within their “deadlineâ€.
The outfit is YOUR BETTER TOMORROW. I spoke with their "supervisor, Brenda Dee. I told her I would dispute the charge and she said they would dispute “right backâ€.
She is supposedly sending me paperwork to return the tape for which I will get one refund.
I called the Visa company for my New York Times card, and told them my story and they said they would start the process based on my claim that I did not authorize a monthly subscription.
They gave me a claim no. and during the course of the conversation, the rep said I had best cancel the card and get a new one anyway, because I didn’t get a confirmation no. from them and had no way to confirm their promise to give me a refund, nor to stop billing me for the never-ending subscription I did not order.
So I mention all this with a warning: NEVER, BUT NEVER, GO FOR A FREE SAMPLE AND GIVE ANYONE YOUR CARD NO. FOR “POSTAGEâ€. They all have scams going. All of them.
Meanwhile, I am getting my new card in 7 to 10 days, and it’s worth the hassle to be rid of these thugs. They also have a bad rep on the Better Business Bureau site.
