Free Sample Scam

Here’s a heads up regarding on-line web sites that offer free samples, and they only need your credit card no. for the postage. Although I should know better,I wasn't thinking when I sent for a free tape that would help people stop smoking. Ed, the heart patient, is smoking again.

When I got my Visa bill, I noticed a charge of $84 and change for this tape. I called the outfit and learn I am on a monthly subscription for a tape each month for this amount. They could cancel the item not yet shipped, but I was liable for the first charge because I hadn’t canceled within their “deadline”.

The outfit is YOUR BETTER TOMORROW. I spoke with their "supervisor, Brenda Dee. I told her I would dispute the charge and she said they would dispute “right back”.
She is supposedly sending me paperwork to return the tape for which I will get one refund.

I called the Visa company for my New York Times card, and told them my story and they said they would start the process based on my claim that I did not authorize a monthly subscription.

They gave me a claim no. and during the course of the conversation, the rep said I had best cancel the card and get a new one anyway, because I didn’t get a confirmation no. from them and had no way to confirm their promise to give me a refund, nor to stop billing me for the never-ending subscription I did not order.

So I mention all this with a warning: NEVER, BUT NEVER, GO FOR A FREE SAMPLE AND GIVE ANYONE YOUR CARD NO. FOR “POSTAGE”. They all have scams going. All of them.
Meanwhile, I am getting my new card in 7 to 10 days, and it’s worth the hassle to be rid of these thugs. They also have a bad rep on the Better Business Bureau site.

This sort of thing I never fell for. If it's "free", send it, if not, keep it. But I am amazed by what happened the day after I signed up with a company to accept credit cards when I bought the motel 20 plus years ago. The scammers much watch for new business accounts or new businesses. I got calls, "this is your credit card company, today is the last day to order tickets and paper" at whatever the discount. Long story short, I fell for one. Had to contact the AG's office in Florida but it was a three-month hassle. This crew was slick. The first day they called and got my partner's name. The next day when I answered they said they said they spoke to Teddi about it yesterday.... Bastards! The coman, Taylor, I'll never forget her name, told me when I complained that "you have to be care of who you do business with". So it was MY fault that I got scammed.

I learned this the hard way. However after threatening to detail the whole thing on facebook, I got the charge removed. I suffered over this one though. I decided to not renew my gym and due to the fine print in the contract which I should have read about giving thirty days notice and I had
to pay a cancellation fee. They are all out to get us since people do not seem to have any idea of fair business practice any more.

It's always so disappointing to run into this sort of thing. Last year my husband was scammed out of nearly that amount when he entered a change of address request with the post office. There is a $1 or so legitimate charge, but he clicked on something else and triggered the bigger charge, and he wasn't aware that it'd happened because he doesn't see the credit card statements. I don't know what he was supposed to get from it.

A ripoff I haven't run into, and an expensive one. Good idea getting a new card. But if you're being charged for one tape, then why should you return that first tape? It sounds like they're trying to confuse people. It's the 2nd mailing that should be returned.

yeah, i figured that out a little later. Their e mail with instructions on returning the unopened product came today. I have 10 days to doit or it expires, and it is involved. They are trying to make it confusing and everything must be just so, so that I'll give up.
