A Movie and Stuff

Toni and I went to the movies at the Bell Tower last Tuesday. They were showing My Cousin Rachel, which is from a novel by Daphne du Maurier that I have never read. There are two other versions, one with Richard Burton and Olivia de Haviland and another with Laurence Olivier and I don’t know who plays Rachel in that one. The current one is with Sam Claflin (who?) and Rachel Weisz.

The story is about Philip, a boy who is orphaned and raised by his wealthy uncle on his estate in Cornwall. He loves his uncle. The uncle becomes ill and goes to Italy for the sun. While there, he falls in love and marries a cousin. As time wears on he turns against her and thinks she is trying to poison him and writes letters to his ward begging him to come save him. Philip goes immediately to Italy to learn his uncle has died. Cousin Rachel visits him at the estate in Cornwall. He is determined to hate her and wreak his revenge on her for the death of his uncle. Instead, she is so beautiful and graceful and sympathetic, that he falls in love with her. He even gives her the estate, providing she doesn’t remarry. Then he expects her to marry him, but if she does, she loses control over the estate. Maybe that’s the reason she says no. They’ve become lovers so it is confusing as to whether she is sleeping with him as an advantage, or because she cares about him.

There is an Italian friend of hers that he suspects she is lovers with. Then he learns that the friend is gay. Meanwhile, she has gone riding on her beautiful white horse and in a malevolent mood, he had suggested she check out the view in a spot that is next to a cliff with treacherous terrain. Terrified then, he jumps on his horse and goes after her but is too late. Both she and the horse have gone over the cliff and lie broken on the beach below. The horse is shot to spare him agony.

In a voice over following his recovery from this tragedy, he speaks ofhis marriage to his lifelong friend, the daughter of his lawyer, and having children. Toni thought these remarks contained fear of an unfaithful wife, suggesting there might be a family illness suffered by his uncle as well as himself that is centered on being paranoid. I didn’t get that impression. The movie was full of unresolved motivation as far as I am concerned, and the take away I got, was that the horse died badly and that’s really the only thing I am upset about. I am haunted by that beautiful white horse lying broken. Screw everyone else.

Sonia joined us for a coffee after the movie and she had seen it and we tore it apart, and a woman at the next table thought we were talking about a person we knew. Anyway, she interrupted to say that her wealthy fiancé broke up with her a year ago and she is just realizing that is a good thing and is starting to enjoy herself. Nadine , the fourth member of our little group, couldn’t join us as she is visiting her son and grandchildren in the Republic of Georgia. He is with the State Department and works with countries helping them into the 21st century. His wife is in the wind and we are all grateful for that and you don’t want to know that story, except that she kept having children she didn’t want to take care of.

I think you would like the book much better than the movie.

Teal, I can't stand for animals to die in movies or books either. Or for children to be hurt or abused.

Does a horse die in the book? I can't read about or watch animals dying.

Don't know what's more exiting. Real life or the movies.

I've had a rather exceptional life, but I didn't know this while it was happening. Not newsworthy, mind you, but full of stuff. Now everything has wound down. So what says me.
