Road Alert

The no. “112” dialed from a cell phone even in areas where there is no service, will go through because it is connected to a satellite. It is a number you can use to protect yourself if you are being followed. This is true for all 50 states.

Some already know that a flashing red light on an unmarked car does not mean it’s a police car. Most don’t know about 112.

Here’s a story:

It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Lauren's parents have always told her never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc.

Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called 112 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't. He told her to keep driving, and remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.

Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

My friend, Nadine, who sent me this, writes:

I never knew about the 112 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe place. Speaking to a service representative at Bell Mobility confirmed that 112 was a direct link to State trooper info. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about 112.

This happened me right here in Matlacha, a few years ago and I didn’t know about the 112. I drove directly to the police station and the guy followed me angrily, then disappeared. Funny... the police didn’t tell me about 112 that day! So please BEWARE.

This is good info to have. Safe driving everyone.

Sadly, according to snopes.com, dialing 112 or 999 on your cell phone will not work if there is no signal. Dialing 112 is very helpful in contacting help no matter where you are. Also very very good to remind people to never to stop for an unmarked car with a flashing light.

I hadn't heard of that. Thanks for posting! I got pulled over by an unmarked vehicle before. The "cop" wanted me to get out of my car and I told him that I wouldn't since he was in an unmarked car. I then asked for ID but when he produced it I realized I had no idea if that was real or fake. He then said he'd call marked vehicles in and I said if he did I would get out of my car. So we waited... I felt certain I would be getting a ticket if the dude was legit since I was wasting so much time, but in the end (and 4 cop cars later) he turned out to be legit and I went and sat in his car with him and we chatted. It was a very strange situation and I do like the advice of keeping going to a busy place. Thanks again for posting this!
