Poll Watching

I sent the following to the local paper ...

Donald Trump is urging his followers to monitor polling places, particularly in the inner cities, to prevent voter fraud. He adds “you know what I mean.” What he means is “bring your guns.” There is a web site where you can order armbands and signs so you can look legitimate. The Republican National Committee is under an consent decree not to have a presence at polling places in effect since the 1980s and due to expire in 2017, because it had off-duty police with guns watching the polls during a New Jersey election, looking menacing, wearing bogus armbands to suggest they were official, which they were not. Huge signs ominously warned that voter fraud was a crime (this means you). This so intimidated some voters, that they left without voting. That election was very close, and the Republican won. The Democrats sued and won and the consent decree has been in force for 35 years.

The Democrats have filed a lawsuit in New Jersey and the court is not dragging its heels – it will be heard this week. The RNC is in danger of having the injunction extended, which it desperately wants to avoid. Reince Priebus, the chairman of the RNC was heard to say that he and the Trump people were closely coordinating on this issue, then he walked that back. The RNC is now trying to separate itself from poll watching efforts.

When one considers how local laws have been passed that makes it difficult for minorities and the young to vote, it would seem that the entire system needs a federal overseer. Did you know that in some states a student i.d. card from a university is not valid as a voter i.d., but a gun permit is? I think it would eliminate a lot of fraud if local legislations with their partisan missions were left out of the loop. We should have only one election system for the entire country. Early voting, extended hours, Sunday hours, the day of the election to be a national holiday, none of it left to local jurisdictions. You want to eliminate voter fraud? Leave the politicians out of the process.

It's not so much resentment about Bernie losing the nomination. But he doesn't have Hilbillery's baggage and he could get down to business. The media backed Clinton, there is no doubt about that. Had Bernie received equal coverage he'd have been the nominee hands down. But no matter, I voted for the ##### only because Trump's Supreme Court nominations would take the country in the wrong direction.

Your gratuitous nickname for her says it all. Slobber over Bernie if you like, but Hillary has ben phenomenal in getting things done. This time, of course, a Republican congress will still work against her, but she knows where the bodies are buried. And there is the possibility that Democrats will regain the senate.

I just got an email that said in early voting, WWI veterans overwhelmingly voted for Clinton. But a news release from legit sources say the FBS is reopening her email case. They will be sorry that they stole the nomination from Bernie.

There are no living WWI veterans. The last one died in the 1980s.

First, she didn't steal the nomination from Bernie. She got 3 million more votes than he did,she did it without super delegates that he was so afraid would make the difference and Bernie now totally supports her. Okay next. Comey released a letter that was so vague, anyone could use it to demonize Clinton. The new investigation involves the laptop of the husband of her top staffer, Anthony Weiner, being investigated for lewd behavior toward a minor. The question is, did Weiner's wife reveal state secrets in an e mail asking him would he plese pick up the cleaning. It is a total toxic reach. And, of course, every male within a mile of Hillary who indulges in sexual misconduct, is doing it because of Hillary. Can you spell sexist?
Jumping to conlusions over Weiner's e mails is like looking at smoke coming out of a building, ignoring the chimney and calling the fire department. It is Comey, caving to his Republican instincts and ignoring Justice department recommendatgions and FBI precedent. He was so annoyed that he couldn't find anything ot charge with her that he poisoned the waters by a public rebuke that was totally uncalled for. I hope he rots.

Also, you appear to still resent that Bernie is not the nominee. Please, move on.

the diffence between us here and you mob --here everyone over 18 years of age is entitled to vote election date is set by our governor general, early voting is available, the last federal election campaign lasted a whole month. no publicity allowed the day prior or on the day itself.
But then there are only 7 states and one territory with 22 million of us all up.
YES it would be better if you had one system for federal elections like us. no state interferance

woe is right on with Trump---our senate-- (like your congress)--half at a time comes up for election every 4 years.
this year was different , the prime minister could not get a bill passed by hostile senate so having the numbers in the lower house passed a bill that made a full vote for the senate as well.
He won the election but the senate now is dead set against him, his plan back fired , the new members of the senate do not like his bill iether.
Thats politics.

I agree our election process is long and cumbersome and prone to mischief. Don't see that changing any time soon. I think there should be term limits in Congress as well, but they'd have to vote on their own limits. Again, it won't happen. Woe is us.

I am a poll worker (PEO, 'Precinct Election Official.') Our instructions are, 1. as usual, no electioneering or interference within the area set by the placement of the US flags, which are placed outside the polling place 100 feet in each direction. 2. If these areas are entered by persons stopping, inquiring or otherwise hindering people who are coming to vote, call the Board of Elections and a deputy sheriff. 3. If anyone enters the polling place wearing electioneering items such as shirts, buttons or caps with campaign slogans or names printed or embroidered on such items, ask them to remove the items or to leave. If they do not comply, refuse their attempt to secure a ballot and call the Board of Elections.
All these rules are Ohio Law.
I have never had to invoke them but two years ago in a primary election I asked a man to go out and turn his shirt inside out. It was a shirt with a campaign slogan printed on it. He complied.

here in the land of OZ----volunteers from each party, hand out (or attempt to) how to vote cards at the entrances

When Ed and I early voted early this week, we did observe Trump logos on shirts. No one said anything. But that's Florida.

I like that law. You may have to ask a lot of people to take off those stupid caps.
