A Political Observation, a Frustration

First , re. McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin for vice president (governor of Alaska), here is an excerpt from a Los Angeles Times story:

“Her presence on the ticket as a strongly antiabortion mother of five -- her infant son has Down syndrome -- promises to energize evangelical voters who have been skeptical of McCain.

Already, some top conservative Christian leaders who criticized McCain in the past have proclaimed enthusiasm for the pick.

Moreover, as a hunter, a member of the National Rifle Assn. and an avid snowmobiler, Palin appeals to many facets of the GOP base.”

Perhaps McCain’s main (or only) reason to choose Palin is to woo the conservative right who have been disenchanted with him for his flip-flop on a lot of their issues. Certainly, any Hillary supporter (perhaps McCain was also thinking of luring women to vote for another woman as if we are such ninnies that gender is all) who takes the time to read about Palin, will vomit before running away from her as fast as they can.

Apparently her Down’s child is a fairly recent birth. I don’t doubt her credentials as a caring mother, but I am certain I do not want her to be my president if McCain keels over (not that remote a possibility, especially with the strains of the presidency). Also, a member of any administration has very little time to mother. So I guess it’s nannies for the kids. But, hey, when a big job calls, sayonara little ones.

On another issue, an acquaintance I used to chat with on my morning walks, a widower and retiree, has moved to the east coast because he can no longer afford the rent on his house. His son was sharing expenses and is now going to school near Stuart, so John moved there too. John would walk his little shih tzu, Tyler, a dog with a personality if I ever saw one. I never asked John over (I am so sorry I did not) because the association seemed so casual. I am surprised by how saddened I feel about his leaving. And I will surely miss that little dog, who was a stubborn little tyke and thought he owned Island Avenue. So, not having had a chance to say a proper goodbye (I thought I would run into him before he left and I didn’t) I decided to E mail him. I got on Google this morning and got many sites that promise a free E mail search. Well, yes, the registration is free but after that, they want your credit card and your first born and it’s only $? for you to get whatever you want and why don’t I believe this part either?

Anyway, several searches on several sites came up empty but Intelius found him and will charge $4.95. Before I shell out $5 I have decided to ask a neighbor who knew John if he has any information, perhaps even a forwarding address. Or I can snail mail him at his former address with a “please forward” note. It’s the principle of the thing.

Well, I’ll pay the $5 if I can’t find him any other way.
And Island Girl, (now working and living in Missouri) who also knew him, would like his information when I get it. John will, I think, be tickled that we have gone to all this trouble.

Excuse me--I'm still alternating laughing and gagging over the VP choice. What a total joke.

Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:

She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.

Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.

She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000.

Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.

She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.

She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.

How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.

I hope you can find your friend.

How right you are about Palin, a neo-con Big Oil religious right dream come true. Palin's conservation and environmental policies are abysmal. True Hillary supporters are running screaming from the building, as this woman opposes everything Hillary stands for and works for.

Love these comments! But I'll stay out of the politics until I do my own blog on the subject. If your friend wants to continue receiving his mail he has given the PO is new address. The PO will automatically forward first class mail for a year, so writing to him will obtain the result you want.

I agree with elderjane all the way. I feel bad for the Downes Syndrome kid. He was probably the sympathy votes she got. C'mon she was a small town mayor who became governor of Alaska (I shouldn't talk...several small town farmers were governor of Idaho.) McCain shouldn't win because he chose a woman. In fact, he shouldn't win because he promises at least four more years of the same old crap The Chimp has been giving us.

Interestingly, I know plenty of women who say sayonara to the little 'uns for jobs much less important than this one. Respectfully, the implication that a mother would rethink her position on abortion after coping with her own Downes Syndrome child fell rather heavy on my ears this morning. Hope you find your "friend". Surely someone can help you get in touch with him.

I have the same concerns that you do about McCain's choice of running mate.
I hate her anti abortion stance...wonder how she will feel about that after she copes with the Downes Syndrome child the rest of her life. Yuk!

Annie Oakley. Just what the neo-cons wanted. Any Hillary supporter who would vote red because Palin is on the ticket needs a shrink.

You have nicely lined up all the etherial arguments required to dismiss the choice of a woman for VP in good conscience. The need is understandable.
Everything's going to be just fine. Not to worry.

Free does not really mean free, does it? Like Freecreditreport.com....why is that not false advertising?
