I was listening to the news this mornings and learned that the Chicago Cubs had won the World Series. I don’t know the players, I haven’t followed baseball since I lived in New York and the Mets stole my heart and did the impossible, beating the Baltimore Orioles to win the series.“Ya gotta believe,” Jerry Grote, the catcher, kept saying.

Happy fans paraded all over the city, including lower Second Avenue where Jay and I had our loft.

When I was a kid in Chicago, my best friend, Wilda (she had brothers, so of course she followed baseball), took me to my first baseball game. I was 11. I started following them. But they couldn’t get a break. I got used to never having a winning team.

So this morning, triggering a long lost, wistful dream, I cried when I heard the news. Go figure.
