The News Such as it Is

Doesn’t the news just boggle your mind? Limbaugh shot himself in the foot with his tasteless mimicry of the Chinese president and he’s getting flak for it. He likened this misadventure to Sid Caesar’s inspired language mangling during his fabulous “Show of Shows” in the 50s, totally missing that Caesar lampooned all languages including English, and did not make fun of any public figure, let alone a world leader so vital to American interests. The story mentioned that Clear Channels Communications Radio Network is home to Limbaugh and Hannity and others, including Bob Costas, whom I admire and respect. I wrote Costas a note telling him he needed to find himself among better company.

Meanwhile, back at the Wikiup, I read that J Lo wants another baby. Does anyone care? I mean, anyone who doesn’t work at Wal-Mart? They should put her, Mia Farrow, Angelina Jolie, and the octomom, in a small room, with no way out and let them amuse each other for several years. Can you imagine the competition?

And the more things change, the more they remain the same. Read this: Andy Gray and Richard Keys, who have been the faces of Premier League soccer on Sky Sports for two decades, became front-page news fodder for their off-air derogatory comments about a female match official and a team executive and sexually suggestive remarks about other women. … While their defenders claimed the two men had engaged in the type of "banter" that goes on in dressing rooms and pubs across the country, Gray and Keys have been mostly vilified as symbols of an "old boys" culture still stuck in the 20th century. … In a rambling appearance on a sports talk radio station, Keys claimed "dark forces" were behind the leaking of the footage that led to his downfall, said he was taken aback by the "frenzy that has blown up" and opined that "football is full of sportsmen who enjoy a bit of lads' mag humor.

Ain’t it a kick that they feel victimized because it has become public knowledge that they are grade-A a..h...s? One was fired, the other resigned. Good. So they have a lot of company, apparently, because it takes a while for enlightened behavior to reach the lowly. It’s a long haul.

Banter of this kind is what leads to discrimination of a more insidious kind. If women are objects of sexual ridicule, and one implies they are only good to get your rocks off, how can they be taken seriously? If it’s of any use to anyone, I also wouldn’t bother with those clubs offering male strippers – I forget the most famous one –I can’t think of a more unappealing way to spend an evening. My turn on is the mind. Has been since I watched George Sanders in The Saint when I was 12. Give me literate and brainy every time. Although I like to tell Ed, if he takes me for granted, I am getting a toy boy if he goes first. Not.

I agree with you. Bob Costas is such a class act, waaaaaaaay to good for the bozos at Clear Channel Radio. And Sky Sports is well rid of the chauvinist oafs Andy Gray and Richard Keys. Uggh.

They are male chauvinists and that is surely becoming the province of men
who came of age in the fifties and sixties. I find your idea of locking up octomom and J.Lo and Mia up together fascinating but let's add Bristol
and Sarah Palin to the mix. It still wouldn't raise the intellectual level.

Now maybe Sky will use two more animated announcers. I grew tired of those 'old boys' years ago. The Premier League is full of racism, too. Worse than anything this side of the pond.

I was pleased to see that the California medical board is suing octomom's OB-Gyn for negligently helping her to have all those babies and not referring her for psychiatric treatment.
