God and His Wars

I ran out of things to read so I picked up one of Edward’s books. Whatever I think of his general dysfunction, I have to admit he’s quite the scholar. This book’s title is “Crusaders – The History of the Wars for the Holy Lands” by David Jones (a rather artless name for such an involved subject.) It starts in the 12th century with Baldwin of Forde (yes, that’s a person), the archbishop of Canterbury, going on a quest to recruit volunteers to fight Saladin, who was taking over the Mediterranean and getting rid of Christians right and left, That’s enough detail. You get the picture. Christians and, for that matter, Muslims and all other religions, have for centuries been fighting to gain dominance because that’s what their God wants and they know because he talks to them. Murder, mayhem, chaos and confusion in the name of God, is a tragedy and a travesty. If there is a God, from what I’ve seen, he is always out to lunch. But honoring their God is not why the faithful engage in these conflicts. It’s all about power over others and that is as true today as it was then.

This made me suddenly want to read about Charlemagne or something medieval. I don't know that history at all.

Marta said it all. I choose the path of kindness, empathy, peace and caring. My career was in the helping professions and I got to know a lot of like minded people. My friends are all loving and friendly. I loathe war and no one really wins. War is folly of the worst kind.

A perfect and sadly tragic description of the ongoing human condition, certainly in the Middle East, but also around the world. How endlessly prone as a species homo sapiens are to worship power and hate and kill the "Other." Is that our homo sapiens species survived to begin with? And yet, the simple decision by each one of us humans each day to constantly choose to live a life of empathy, kindness, mutual consideration, and caring understanding is, to me, the only gateway to the heaven of peace we all seek.

What some people manage to believe is absolutely.. ah... well, unbelievable.

I doubt that those who reference God and religion to support domineering goals are actually of the faithful. They just use religion for their own ends.
