Dr. Laura and Free Speech

Dr. Laura says her free speech is being violated because she was chastised for using the N word on her show. If she wants to know what violation of free speech is, she should look at the way totalitarian societies treat people who offend them. She wasn’t jailed, or hauled off in chains. She had a right to say what she did. Her bosses had the right to be offended. You can walk into a party and insult your host. That’s free speech. And the host can ask you to leave because it is his right not to have to put up with you. Finally she is reaping the consequences of her polemic responses to those who sought her advice. Her fans thought she was so cool because she told it "like it is." Her meanness, masquerading as tough love, gained her a large following made up of, in my opinion, mean-spirited people who enjoyed seeing her put down the defenseless. They confused truth and honesty with put downs, meanness and vicious advice. She made a lot of money being mean. Too bad she gets to keep it. She never impressed me because she is cruel.

Sarah Palin is now one of her supporters, adopting her cause as her own because they are both conservative women. Oh, vomit. Interesting to learn, as I did on tonight’s MSNBC news show, that Dr. Laura ridiculed McCain for choosing Palin as his running mate, saying something like, sheesh, couldn’t he find a qualified women from all the really brilliant women out there? Maybe Palin missed that. Now that Dr. Laura’s comments have been re-aired, perhaps Palin is having a moment’s pause. Assuming anything ever gives her pause before she shoots her mouth off.

Pieces of trash such as "Dr." Laura are not worth my notice. I'm spending my time worrying about Ted Rall and Matt Bors in Afghanistan.

The interview with the caller (to Dr. Laura) was enlightening, also. Let's face it, we still live in a racist society.

Why on EARTH should we "Face it," instead of insisting on CHANGE? We strive to be better than this, and to leave this world a better place for our having been here. "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."- Edmund Burke 18th century political philosopher.
Evil is NOT neutral. There cannot be neutrality toward evil. Anyone who is not actively opposing it is actively supporting it.

There are just some things you do not say. I have black friends that use the N. word among themselves but I would never insult them by using it.
It doesn't have anything to do with my constitutional rights. It is merely being courteous.

I was not familiar with the content of Dr. Laura's show until this incident. It was covered this a.m. on NPR along with the follow-up from other broadcasts. Based solely on the segments that were rebroadcast this morning, I'd have to agree that she's no Dr. Joyce Brothers. For some reason, it comes as no surprise that Palin would support a twit like this! Good post!
