Domestic Travail, Part 2

The thought struck me today that I should count all the silverware and I discovered that my (former) cleaning lady Caroline, helped herself to three of everything in the set except the tablespoons. 3 dinner forks, 3 salad/dessert forks, 3 butter knives, 3 teaspoons. She didn’t take any tablespoons. Probably doesn’t eat soup. This has gone way beyond coincidence.

I am replacing the items through Replacements Ltd., who specialize in discontinued patterns. I am beyond furious with her and want her to know I know, and Ed and my friend, Nadine, keep saying that if I accuse her, she can sue. I’ll just write her a note that says, “Consider the silverware a parting gift.” Cost to replace $160. Any thoughts?

She must consider me clueless. That is as enraging as the actual theft.

Does your homeowner's insurance cover it? If you have a lot of something like silverware, sometimes a rider is required, but maybe not for a smallish claim like this (as opposed to thousands of $).

You could tell the housecleaner that there must have been a burglary because you are missing these items that are going to cost more than $100 to replace, not pointing the finger at her, could she have put them in a different drawer because otherwise you need to obtain a police report for your insurance, so that will mean contacting the police. Maybe this would scare the flatware into reappearing.

It would be First Degree Petty Theft in the state of Florida, max penalty 1 year in jail and $1000 fine. https://statelaws.findlaw.com/florida-law/florida-theft-laws.html

Include your parting gift sentence in the note that’ll tell her that you know; replace your items, and shrug it off. It’ll drive you nuts — I know it would me. Instead plan about how to prevent theft. Sometimes relatively small theft is worse than something bigger, because of the interaction between you and the other person. It gets under one’s skin.
The worst theft I suffered was one I was afraid to report, because the jerks also used my computers to attempt to hack several large institutions. I was concerned in case they'd had some success.

Yes, I have decided to send her a note that says "Consider the silverware a parting gift from me. We're done." I think she also took my heating pad that I always keep at bedside and it has disappeared. Well, live and learn.

I forgot the element of home violation, yeah, that's a huge part of it.
