Domestic Travail

Well, I am going to write about domestic issues. I changed the bedding on our Tempurpedic split king bed on recently. It took most of the day, done in stages, with rest periods They call it a split king because it is two twins attached. You use twin fitted sheets for the mattresses but can still use a king-size top sheet and comforter. However, Ed is a restless sleeper and bunches up the bedding on his side so unless I get in bed first, which is rare, I don’t have any covers.

My solution was to use twin coverings on top as well and fold over the ends in the middle. Then I put a top sheet on that which is king-sized to protect the comforters from visiting cats. It also serves as a barrier for my bed remote, which has been known to slip to the floor between the twins.

Also, the fitted sheets that I buy from an outfit that makes them specifically for the slightly longer twin beds on the Temperpedic, don’t stay in place when you raise the bed. My solution is to wrap a 3 inch wide elastic band around the center of each mattress. This has worked. I’m amazed. Finally a solution that does the job.

But making each side is still an issue because the sheets bunch up, even on my side. I have never had that kind of problem, but now I do. My solution to easier daily bed making is to pin the sheet to the comforter. This takes about 30 safety pins for one unit. I tried basting the sheet to the comforter, thinking that might be easier, but it isn’t. So Ed is sleeping with a basted set until next time, and I pinned mine which took way not as long to do. Having said all this, I am sleeping better with an adjustable bed. Ed, not so much. If I had it to do over, I’d opt for two separate adjustable beds, not necessarily Tempurpedic. You can always keep them totally next to each other and you can make them without twisting yourself into a pretzel to do it.

Then the next issue is forks. Every morning I empty the dishwasher and count the forks. I should have eleven (the set is 12 and a wrapped new fork is in the drawer but I don’t recruit it, since I am superstitious.) If I don’t find missing forks, I search until I do, and I include going back into the trash and opening trash bags. My cleaning lady came to clean a day ago. The following morning, instead of eleven forks I had eight. A total search did not yield the 3 missing forks. Sometimes I find one in the refrigerator, stored there with a plate of half eaten whatevers. But not this time. The only wild card in this scenario is the cleaning lady. Did she accidentally toss the forks in the trash? I have been tolerating her penchant for taking things apart and not returning them to their original positions. She stored my kitty food under the counter, instead of returning it to the counter top where I keep it for easy access so I had to hunt for it. My soap dishes were empty and I had to search for the soap. My sponge soap dish liners are sometimes tossed into the trash. I put them in the dishwasher when they get dirty. They should not be thrown out. Sometimes she leaves and includes in her kit of tools a cleaning product of mine, like my glass cleaner, or my English oil, and I don’t know they’re gone till I try to find them. Also, when she is gone I have to hunt for things I use, and put items back into the bathrooms that were removed and are sitting in the living room. To avoid not being able to find my toothbrush, or having it confused with one I use for scrubbing, is to make the bed, and remove all dressing room stuff onto the bed till she is finished and then personally move everything back.

Sometimes things, like the bathmats, are left outside. I have been living with this awkward arrangement because she is a super cleaner, but the forks? Sorry folks, this won’t do. And I don’t know if any of these omissions are deliberate or a mindset that is unorganized. Why would she steal my Oneida forks? Three? Sorry, but I have to find another cleaning person.

Maybe she has the same Oneida set and lost 3 of her forks?
Don has bought me 2 $500.00+ vacuums (1 for upstairs and 1 for downstairs) but I would rather have a robot vacuum.

Very unlikely, since she is struggling to make ends meet and works the deli counter at Publix Supermarket (long hours). I always felt sorry for her and overlooked her walking off with my special glass cleaner and occasional bottle of English furniture oil, but my silverware? That's a deal breaker. She lives with her two school age kids. She took 3 of the items she needed. It's not as if she gives dinner parties. This is a pricey set. Replacing one teaspoon, $20. She isn't in that league. I could forgive her walking off with my glass cleaner or bottle of English oil, but my silverware? No way. And I only knew about it because, in order to avoid losing it in the trash, I count it every day. How could she know? Sorry, lady, ya gotta go.

I have the deluxe I Robot for pet hair and I have had it over two years.
You can order parts from Amazon and it does an amazingly good job. I think that they make a scrubber also. I lock it up in one room at a time and block all the places where it can get stuck. It cleans tile floors too. I have had to replace a couple of plastic parts but other than that, it is maintenance free. A real labor saver.

You've taken a big step by deciding she has to go, don't waver.

You have to get rid of everyone else in your house before your stuff stops disappearing. When others worked with me from my apartment, things like my vacuum and a kitchen stepstool were borrowed without my knowing. I did not like that. Especially when the stepstool, brand new, was returned covered with paint.

I think cleaning ladies are almost more trouble than they are worth! Mine took little things, one of which was a white gold plain wedding band. I am going for robotic appliances instead. I hate looking for lost items.

I don't get her often, maybe once every couple of months, but the bathrooms and the floors getting really clean helps a lot. Since vacuuming hurts my back, I may get a robot. Which one do you use?
