About Diet and Health

Mick’s funny post on dieting made me remember that some time ago on Blogster, Mendacious Thoughts posted a diet plan that works for me. I can’t find the original, but remember it because I use it all the time. But before I get into that, I just lost the two pounds I couldn’t lose (I am not exercising as much because of my back), when I was sick and the antibiotics messed with my stomach. I am now maintaining my “old” set point that had got away from me due to recent problems.

Here is the diet plan that works for me. It is based on biofeedback. Depending on your psychology, it will or won’t be the answer for you. Some mindsets resist all attempts to change behavior -- for these people it is a control thing. They won’t take suggestions from anyone, including themselves. If you are not one of these, then this will work for you.

On a letter size sheet of paper write your current weight in the upper left corner. On the lower right corner, write your target weight, something reasonable, like 10 or 15 pounds less. Tape it on the refrigerator or a wall. Weigh yourself every morning on the same scale, with or without nightwear, before or after a bathroom trip, but always the same, and write the weight and the date on the sheet of paper. Do this every day. Do not consciously change anything else.

That’s it. It took about a month before my weight started to go down and after that it went steadily down. Every day (every day) a few ounces less. What happens is that on a daily basis you will notice what you did when your weight went up, or down, and you gradually begin to eliminate the things that cause an increase, or focus on the things that lower the number. What did I do that raised the number? Oh, it must have been the chips. I didn’t walk, I had ice cream. My target was 112 and I reached it in three months. I had started at 125 (for me a really chunky number).

When you reach your target weight, you might wish to lose more, so you can set a new goal and keep on going.

I continue to do this. Today I am at 111 ½. I am trying to go down to 110 (French jeans size – no, I won’t throw them out). This is now harder for me to do because my back is a major problem.

However, I am now taking Niagin and it has raised my energy level and I think I can do hard things, but when I do them, I get very sick, nausea, pain. But it is great not to feel sluggish all the time even if I shouldn’t lift anything heavy (and life is full of heavy lifting). It’s a long road, but I’m on it.

Here is the info on Niagen.

I take two every morning and from the start, I felt more energetic and I don’t think this is me kidding myself. I have been under par for so long and suddenly I have energy. Another benefit is that it allows me to go longer without eating. I can’t figure that out and I don’t care. Not cheap, but oh so worth it. I was also taking a super B vitamin, which I have stopped because one can overdose on B.

It is available on Amazon.

Another super health product is Pom pomegranate juice that I have just started drinking. Here are the benefits:

Health Benefits of the Pomegranate
• Most powerful anti-oxidant of all fruits
• Potent anti-cancer and immune supporting effects
• Inhibits abnormal platelet aggregation that could cause heart attacks, strokes and embolic disease
• Lowers cholesterol and other cardiac risk factors
• Lowers blood pressure
• Shown to promote reversal of atherosclerotic plaque in human studies
• May have benefits to relieve or protect against depression and osteoporosis

Many studies show that the pomegranate is one of the most powerful, nutrient dense foods for overall good health. These clinical findings clearly show a correlation between pomegranate compounds and their positive effect on both human and animal cardiovascular, nervous, and skeletal health. This is one fruit that you can't afford to exclude from your diet.

It can be found in the refrigerated area near the orange juice. A 48 oz. bottle is $10. Not cheap. Or you can find the fruit and prepare it yourself. (I don’t have the patience. A pomegranate is a complicated fruit.)

Them’s me thoughts.

I'll give it a shot, especially since I don't have to buy any fancy food.

A food diary works for me. But it's too much like a diet. It's not something I could stick with. I do need to do something to take the weight off my knee. For each pound it takes 4 pounds of pressure off the joint. As for those capsules, it looks like they contain nicotine. LOL that would explain why they work.

Try the daily weigh-in and notation. It doesn't cost anything, there is no effort involved. You don't have to change what you eat or what you do. But you will, eventually, and without even being aware of it. But if you are one of those who won't on any account listen to yourself, then you are one of those for whom this will not work. What can you lose? Well, fat off your knee for one.

As to nicotine, the active ingredient in Niagen is nicotinamide riboside. Only the name is suggestive -- there is no nicotine in this product. Wiki says: Nicotinamide riboside,"hidden vitamin" also known as NR. It is a pyridine-nucleoside precursor to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide or NAD+ which is a coenzyme found in all living cells. In other words, taking these pills reinforces the natural healthy productivity of your cells.

Maybe this method will combat my insane craving for carbs. I had never
had problems with my back until recently, I guess it is an old age thing.

I think I have had a mild curvature since childhood and its symptoms were masked because of my life of ballet work. As I aged, and slowed down, and spinal stenosis kicked in from age, the pain became noticeable. My lower back is now in bad shape from the accident. I am slowly returning to all of my ballet routines, plus exercises from the therapy place. But it is slow going because I am susceptible to instant fatigue from workouts and from doing difficult housework. It is what it is. I have said, when younger, that when the grim reaper shows up, he should be prepared for a fight.

Your paper method reminds me of a factory experiment to increase productivity: A manager would write a number, large, on the factory floor and leave it there without explaining. It didn't actually correspond to anything, but he'd erase it and write a (random) new one each day -- and workers started trying to make the number go up by working harder and increasing productivity. I'll have to try pomegranate juice.
