Back from Tech Hell

I’ve spent the past week trying to solve the problem of getting on to MyBloggers. Since the server was changed, I would repeatedly get a page that says “Connection Timed out – try again later”. This went on for days. I reset Firefox to default setttings, no go. Then I called Hewlett Packard support and was in a chat with a tech for two hours and then the chat froze and I kept getting a box that said there was an error in the script and I couldn’t get rid of it. Then I got on the phone with H-P help line and an Indian told me they had techs that could solve my problem for $60 – what they mean is they will subcontract to other Indians – trust me that’s a nightmare and I’ve been down that road before, so, to his utter dismay (maybe he gets a commission), I said no, no, no.

I called Jondude to see if anyone else was having this problem – he said not, which I suspected, because I was getting E mail notifications to subscribed blogs (that I will now finally get around to reading). He gave me a tip that it might be our internet provider.

I got on the phone with CenturyLink who provides my internet service and they couldn’t find the problem after 90 minutes, and the tech kept asking me to plug and unplug things and this was really difficult because the wire connections and peripherals under the computer are a mess and the light is bad and I couldn’t see, let alone understand what I was looking at. And I knocked one of the speakers to the floor in the back. You know, a situation where I have to lie on the floor, grab it, snake it up. and Ed grabs it from the top. Maybe I should Velcro the speakers to the desk.

So I told her (the tech) that I would ask my husband to call as he knows what that stuff is. When he got home, he made the call (there were a few grumbles because, you know, he is very busy) and he spent another 90 minutes on the phone and they determined that our computer was not recognizing the MyBloggers server, and could I give her the name of the administrator. At which point, I said aaaarrrrgggghhh because I have not been successful in the past year in reaching Eddie at all.

Back on the phone to Jondude, who managed to get a message to Eddie and Eddie needed our IP address which I got, through sheer genius, by Googling “how can I find my IP address” and voila! up popped a site containing the number.
Back to Jondude who then messaged the info to Eddie and the problem is fixed.

So thank you to Jondude for his very helpful tips, thank you to Eddie for this arcane stuff you do that makes things work, and I hope you are not still mad at me and will re-present yourself as an ongoing presence because we all miss you.

xx, Teal

Oh, and this blocking-access software that ISPs use is probably kicking in and doing the same thing with the old webpages of many other blogging sites, such as Blog.com and Thoughts.com. Old websites which don't get enough updating.

The steps you took must have been what also got me back on -- thanks. I just found the other day I could see the site, after being blocked for months.

well I did wonder why I seemed to be the only one not getting on since many blog pals were posting. Why would ISPs use blocking software anyway? What's it to them?

Delighted!

I went through the same damn thing but it fixed itself after a couple of
weeks. Everyone denied being the problem from HP right on down.
