FIRST LET ME SAY that I've never been to Brooklyn. I spent a weekend in Manhattan back in '61 at a college newspaper editor convention, but saw little of NY even then. I did see the Ramsey Lewis Trio & Dick Gregory on the same bill at Basin St. East, but that was the highlight of the weekend, other than a sweet girl from Minnesota...
SO ANYWAY, I was a Brooklyn Dodger fan from an early age, only because my father and g'father were Dodger fans. So I've always had this romantic, non-fact-based vision of Brooklyn as a special place. Even more special as of now: my oldest daughter has just moved there with her husband and her little girl. Hubby has taken a job in NYC. Much as I abhor travel, I'm assuming that at some point before long I'll grit my teeth and go visit them and actually SEE BROOKLYN.
MIXED EMOTIONS flow. For a rural rube like me, the Big City carries with it connotations of both fear and wonder. But they have chosen an excellent neighborhood and I have to feel all's well. Unlike me, making do with the simple life, they will have EVERYTHING at their disposal.
Perhaps the most I have to worry about is the prospect of my granddaughter growing up with a NY accent...
