It's a Saturday morning and I slept in (15' worth)! I had trouble sleeping last night dreaming about red raspberries. I spent six and a half hours picking them yesterday (for Nate and Emily). They sell for $7/pint, and I picked 20 pints. Free labor, so it's all profit.
Of course, I got to see my new granddaughter and "old" grandson (nearly 3).
They wanted to know the history of the family farm they're going to be moving onto in January. It was bought and settled in 1864 by William and Margaret Silverthorn (280 acres worth, eventually expanding to over 700 ac.). Over time and several "splits", I wound up with 120 acres. I've already deeded 20 ac to Nate and Emily, for starters. (That's where the 12,000 strawberry plants are located.)
Tomorrow, they're going to announce (in their newsletter) not only the "Big Move", but a change in their name, from Tranquil Ridge Farm to Silverthorn Farm. Despite the fact Nate married into the Silverthorn line, he's insistant on honoring the name. Unlike my father, who married a Silverthorn, Nate recognizes and appreciates what is happening. I love his excitement and enthusiasm for taking over the farm and transforming the land into sustainable agriculture (rather than the same old corn and beans).
Of course, I, too, am thrilled with the prospect. I worried for years as to what would become of the farm after me. I sure never predicted one of my kids would take it over. I'm one happy camper!
Enjoy a great weekend.
