You're Never Too Old

Never too old to do what? Improve!

So many elderly folks just quit trying, quit living. They figure they have nothing to live for, that death is just around the corner. While that may be true for some, most "seniors" have many years of productivity.

I got to thinking when I read a newspaper article highlighting a book by Doug Lemov, "Practice Perfect: 42 Rules for Getting Better at Getting Better".

Basically, it said to practice, practice, practice. I'd prefer to stress the continuous simple doing of something to improve.

For example, I'm not using my age as an excuse for my decline in my golfing skills and scores. No, I don't hit the ball as far, but I'm not giving up on my putting and chipping. I'll continue to work on my game, trying to improve.

The same is true with my piano playing. I'll never be good, but I can get better. I don't call it practicing, like when I was a kid. It's just playing and challenging myself more.

In most aspects of my life, I try to improve, my health in particular. I try to eat better and exercise more (or as much). That doesn't take "practice", just motivation and determination. The same goes for learning. You're never too old to read or watch an enlightening program on TV.

End of sermon. PS: I'm not planning to read the book.

I am with you- I am not ready to roll over and die. There is still too much to experience.

That's precisely why I try to take care of myself. Remember that song: "Please Mr. Custer, I don't want to die"? (I may have to google it.)

Again, love your attitude! I think it's perfect. I am sure you are making the most of every day you are on the planet!

Thanks Kristi. I try. But read Jeri's first comment below. Moratorium? Why?

We all need hobbies. I wish I was "mechanical" enough to restore a car or RV. Kudos to you.

So, Randy, when are you gonna try sky diving?

This is part of the subject of "collecting" things as we get older and the like. When somebody at the 4C Camp for Adults said that she was too old to learn to play the dulcimer, Betty, an assistant to the instructor pointed out that Irv (Betty's 90-year old husband) was taking the workshop! I went through the negativity when I was 37 and started college. Never again will I be negative about moving forward or trying new things!

Hurrah for you. I'm still not going sky diving, however!

Have spent my life living with this philosophy and, trust me, there were people around me who were discouraging as in "why do you try so hard?" And my response was "because it pleases me."

Very good answer--one for me to use.

Let's have a moratorium on instruction and self improvement.
