Never too old to do what? Improve!
So many elderly folks just quit trying, quit living. They figure they have nothing to live for, that death is just around the corner. While that may be true for some, most "seniors" have many years of productivity.
I got to thinking when I read a newspaper article highlighting a book by Doug Lemov, "Practice Perfect: 42 Rules for Getting Better at Getting Better".
Basically, it said to practice, practice, practice. I'd prefer to stress the continuous simple doing of something to improve.
For example, I'm not using my age as an excuse for my decline in my golfing skills and scores. No, I don't hit the ball as far, but I'm not giving up on my putting and chipping. I'll continue to work on my game, trying to improve.
The same is true with my piano playing. I'll never be good, but I can get better. I don't call it practicing, like when I was a kid. It's just playing and challenging myself more.
In most aspects of my life, I try to improve, my health in particular. I try to eat better and exercise more (or as much). That doesn't take "practice", just motivation and determination. The same goes for learning. You're never too old to read or watch an enlightening program on TV.
End of sermon. PS: I'm not planning to read the book.
