As the Carpenter's sang, "We've only just begun".
Gosh, I'm sick of college basketball. But I can't help myself in watching it. This is as close to being addicted to something as I've ever been.
But as much as I love watching college (not pro) b-ball, I have a gripe. So what's new, huh?!
I don't like season ending league tournaments. I know they're money makers, and fans flock to them, and they give hope to the bottom dwellers, but really--are they necessary?
In my most humble opinion, they unnecessarily extend the season. Some teams (Ill., for example) have to play 4 games in 4 days. And if they happen to win the tourney, they become an automatic qualifier for the NCAA "Big Dance", despite a losing season record. Many "on the bubble" teams are forced out. This doesn't seem fair. These conference tourneys are meaningless to the regular season league leaders. They often "dog it", use obscure subs, and become unmotivated to play, because they know they're already a sure thing for the dance.
I used to feel that way about being forced to give final exams when I taught school. Here's an A student, who has given his all, earned his grade all semester, then has to prove it all over again. He/she has nowhere to go but down! On the other hand, the D and F students can't get any lower! They've goofed off but now can actually pass the class with a "season ending" push.
Again, it's not fair to the hard working, season long teams (or students) to be penalized for a job well done. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking with it!
