H.b. Daughter #1

Hard to believe my first (of 3) daughter turned 39 yesterday. She was conceived in Pomona, California, born in Frankfort, Indiana. We moved back "home" (for me, anyway) over the summer.
While I enjoyed my 7 years in California (teaching), I was sick of (and sick from) the smog (really bad back then). I had heard on the news that an autopsy was to be performed on an unidentified person to determine how long she had lived in Southern Calif.
How could they tell? By how "black" her lungs were from inhaling smog--the blacker the longer!
I thought, my child's first of many breaths will be filled with polluted air. And what about MY lungs? Ugh. So, we decided to get out.
I was lucky to get a job in my home town. And fresh air!
So yes, I've been here for 39 years, and in my current house for 35 of them.
Since I inherited the farm land, it's a good thing I'm close by. When I look back over my life's major decisions, moving back was the smartest thing I ever did. No regrets.

Speaking of the farm, Nate and Emily (my 3rd oldest) have completed the 2012 market season as of Saturday. Now they can concentrate on making the big move to the farm where they'll set up operations. We are all very excited.

As a sideline, on their way back from Michigan last weekend (to pick up a humongous wood burner), they stopped at Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve (on my suggestion) to do a tour. Emily said Nate asked all sorts of questions regarding raising buffalo!!! He's thinking of his ol' father in law! Perhaps my dream will, at long last, come to fruition! Now that's reason to be excited--and to live to 100!!

Have a good week.

Speaking of big birds, the sandhill cranes are beginning to migrate your way. Big flocks overhead yesterday.

You truly are a great and wonderful man. I think I mat need to say that once in a while since I do not hesitate to 'criticize'.

Thanks. Some other readers may not so readily agree!

Saw 3 bison in the mist while I was out for a (very) short run yesterday am! Was cold & foggy, so just went for 20 minutes. Bison are 2 farms over from me, i think they use them for cutting horse training.

My nearest buffalo (ranch) is 40 miles away. I think it would be a popular tourist attraction for my kids. It would help their market numbers/sales. I'm happy you continue to "look me up" here at mybloggers. I've resumed my exercise routines in the basement--boxing, weights, walking/jogging (in circles). I just hate the cold, windy outdoor conditions.

Growing up in the Bay Area of CA, I remember the smog. I remember not being able to see from one side of the valley to the other. We complain a lot about the tough smog regulations that have been in effect for many years, but I have to say, our air quality is very noticeably better! But it will never compete with the 'see forever' skies of rural America. Glad you got to return to your farm!

Thanks Margaret. I remember those eye burning, cough inducing days in southern California. When I went back 7-8 yrs ago, the air was better, but the congestion and "madhouse" lifestyle was worse. However, unlike Indiana, there were things to do, places to go, etc. Trade off.

Sorry about your daughter. I have one sister nearby and she's got memory loss, although she has not forgotten me. I have first cousins in Chicago (I'm in Florida) and that's it. We have a close connection but we rarely communicate. I would hope whatever has caused the apartness with your daughter could be mended. Family can be precious.

Ouch. I see my daughter once every year. She lives in Honduras, that's why.

I subscribe to that philosophy, but sometimes, the past creeps into my mind. Like when I see me ex-wife. Her one redeeming feature is she's the mother of my great children.

very cool indeed. That would really be a dream come true! And I'd want PICTURES no matter what.

When I try to upload photos, it always says "error, too large". I haven't figured out how to downsize them. Frustrating. I need Fredo here. I can always put the pics in my photo album, however. So all is not lost.

He does not know how to download pictures yet.

My two daughters are also well into their Thirties. It's sobering, huh? Re buffalo: there're a lot where I live. People eat a lot of buffalo meat, which is less fatty than other beef and, to me, tastes the same. The Buffalo Bistro, near us, serves a pretty fair amount of it. They also have a delicious rattlesnake/rabbit sausage.

Lucky you. I can't even find buffalo meat in a supermarket. I have to buy directly from the "grower". Plus, it ain't cheap.

The good outweighs the bad--and there have been a few of the latter!
