I realize I'm a bit premature, but Flag Day is coming (June 14). I always put out my flag.
Yes, I'm a patriotic guy despite never having served in the armed forces. (I was in ROTC though).
Possibly, and indirectly, I display my flag for friends and neighbors to see. The reasoning behind that is to show that non-Christian Americans love their country just as much as Christians do. Non-believers are patriotic, too.
I don't think we make a big enough deal out of Flag Day. Independence Day trumps it, so it's ignored, more or less.
And it's not an official national holiday. It is proclaimed "Flag Day" by the president, however.
Flag Day was first officially observed in 1877 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the selection of the flag. In 1885, a Wisconsin school teacher lobbied to establish Flag Day as n annual national celebration. It wasn't until President Woodrow Wilson established Flag Day as such on May 30, 1916.
So, get "Old Glory" out of the closet and hang it out for all to see on June 14, 2012.
Proud to be an American,
Randy
