Fan(atic)

I loved that old ABC Wide World of Sports show that used "The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat" as its mantra. I can still see that guy go off the ski jump ramp in a tangle of limbs, ski's and poles.

I got to thinking about the emotions a sports fan goes through before, during, and after a game (whatever sport).

TV and newspapers hype up the upcoming game to no end. It's supposed to encourage one to watch the game, perhaps in person. It's to increase ones interest and enthusiasm.

For three and a half hours Saturday, I was on a high as I watched Purdue whip Ohio State (football). Suddenly, with 3 seconds to go, a "hail Mary" passed turned things around, and Purdue snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. I noted the change in my emotions, from exhilaration to depression. It took me several hours to recover.

For this reason alone, I seldom get emotionally involved in watching any ballgame. But it's difficult to suppress feelings. And it was a roller coaster of emotions over the weekend. My IU football team lost 31-30, last second. Bummer. But the Indy Colts won a thriller! And the women's pro basketball team (Fever) won the WNBA championship!

I guess that's why we Americans--even World wide--enjoy sports so much. We identify with teams and players in a bizarre way, like they're part of our family somehow. We crave that special feeling of winning--a feel good sensation. Instant gratification. Arms in the air shouting YES, YES, YES!

AS for losing, well, we get over it quickly. We rationalize reasons for the loss, and move on, eagerly anticipating the next game--and victory! Agonies and thrills.

Yeah for the Giants! That was a victory I loved hearing about. Yes, I remember that sentence in the opening of the Wide World Of Sports. Whatever happened to that show?

WW of Sports went by the way of the dodo bird.

And the Bears beat the Lions on Monday. I know this and I am not even a sports fan.

I used to be a big Bear fan. The older I get, the less I care.

Sorry. Guess I don't know you that well.

In sports, player or fan, you have to have a short memory. Easier said than done. Even tho' I enjoyed the high of my FSU Seminoles hammering the Hurricanes Saturday night, I still haven't gotten over them blowing their otherwise undefeated season by losing to a mediocre NC State team, 17-16, several weeks ago.

Well, at least your team wins most of the time. I can't say that about mine!

I used to attend Grey Cup parties in my youth but only for the camaraderie. I always had to fake jubilation or misery, depending on which team won or lost.

Are you talking ballgames or sex?

The only agony of da feet that interests me these days is my own when i walk too much in crappy shoes. I flipped baseball cards as a kid and Tom Seaver was a Met and Micky Mantle was a Yankee, but when big bucks entered the game and players when wherever the $$ was, I dropped out. I used to say years ago when the subject came up on the job: When they come to watch me work, I'll watch them work."

Yeah, I haven't paid to watch a game for ages. It's amazing what it costs nowadays. And for what? Just for a fleeting thrill.

I was happy my Packers won, but then was soooo deflated watching the skins come back and then lose. I totally understand this post!!!

As only a sports fan would. Nobody likes to lose.
