I'm thinking about dropping one thing from my mybloggers profile: my home state. I'm so ashamed of Indiana. I'm a man without a state, or so I wish.
Just yesterday, a Superior Court Judge ruled in favor of Indiana's school voucher program that redirects money from public schools to help offset private school tuitions. Opponents will now seek a ruling from the nation's Supreme Court. Lots of luck.
It only gets worse.
Now, we have a state senator (Republican, of course) who has introduced a bill which would allow school districts to "provide for the recitation of the Lord's Prayer at the beginning of each school day" (version to be decided). (!!)
Another Republican (like God, I hate capitalizing that word),
has authored Senate Bill 89, giving districts footing to "require the teaching of various theories concerning the origin of life, INCLUDING CREATION SCIENCE." (my caps) (!)
Here's quoting the Lafayette Journal and Courier's editorial response (Jan. 14):
"Who do these guys think they are? What are they trying to prove, especially when the state has given families an easy path to parochial schools? And, really, who do they believe they are trying to save--and we aren't talking salvation in the educational sense? Are these guys looking to have schools defend constitutional lawsuits?"
"The senators, of course, know the answers to those questions. Good luck getting the senators to come clean on their intentions."
Right on! I couldn't have said it better! I applaud their remarks. Indiana is joining Kansas and Texas as the laughing stock states of America. I am so embarrassed. The derivation of our nickname, Hoosier, is so true--a hick.
