Curious George

Just out of curiosity, does marriage counseling ever work? Do counselors really save marriages, or is it a racket? I have spent thousands to "save" two marriages, failing twice. And I know of no one that has had counseling work. Just wondering.

The "Creationism" bill here in my ignorant state (a fact, as we rank near the bottom in college graduates), is on hold. The Houe speaker has said he won't put it up for a vote. Reason? An amendment was judiciously added to include teaching ALL religious theories of creation. Since just a Christian (Bible) story being "taught" would likely be Constitutionally struck down, they thought introducing every and all religions would do the trick. But the question became, who out there is authoritative enough to teach both biology and umpteen religous theories? Very few.
"Wait'll next year" is the cry from the wackos.

Did anybody see the NOVA on the Himalayas last night? Absolutely spectacular! The species of cranes there sound remarkably similar to our sandhill cranes, which, by the way, have been flying north recently (over my house). Way early!
More evidence of global warming (as is Himalaya glaciers melting at an alarming rate).

And if that isn't enough evidence, the ground around here never did freeze deeper than 2 inches. 30 years go, it was 2 feet!
That's why "the house" is currently stuck in knee deep mud in the middle of a corn field. Who would have thunk it?

Until the temps got around 40 yesterday, they were able to move the house ALMOST to the final resting spot (sounds like a cemetery site, which appears likely at this time), 200 yards away, I'm guessing. It will have to sit there until the ground either freezes up (unlikely now) or dries out. So frustrating.

Yes, as Teal comments, counseling can work with a couple when both are invested in the work of therapy. And even when counseling leads to a healthy parting of the ways, it can heal wounds, permitting both parties to move on without baggage and resentments. Creationism is not science, far from it, and if it is in a curriculum, perhaps it belongs in religious studies faith perspectives or humanities.

I hadn't thought of that aspect (therapy helping one to move on).

Marriage counseling is not good for marriages that are over, and it is over when at least one partner is no longer sure they are still in love. Counseling is for troubled marriages when the two still love each other deeply. A communication problem is not an absence of love. As a therapist, I provided plenty of marriage counseling, but I too had to learn when not to. As a new therapist, I tried to provide what clients asked for, and likely much of that was in vain. I learned quickly when to decline- or ask them to return after they both were sure that they loved each other, or were determined to make the marriage work. Sometimes. they actually returned!

Interesting insight. Did I not realize (or remember) you were once a therapist? In any case, I hope never to see another one!

I am amazed at the concept of teaching mythology in schools as if it was science.
Good luck on getting a hard freeze.

All rational people are amazed. Will the folly ever disappear?

I will have to keep an ear to the sky. We are in the flight path for sandhills flying north on their way to WI. I missed their migration in the fall. Our wintering Canada geese don't know which way to fly-south,is winter over? north, is it spring now?
comment by boots586 on Feb 16, 2012 2:59 PM ()
Was it ever winter? I've yet to shovel snow. Going for a walk today.

this is tough to answer Whatever you believe in.Are you going to have some sort of service for House.

I think the house is just sleeping now, resting up for the final journey!

I had to chuckle about the house's final resting place comment... it does sound like a cemetery spot...
I think counseling can work - if both people are working together to make the marriage work. Counselors can't perform miracles, they can only steer people in a better direction...

If both parties in a marriage really want to solve the problems, a therapist can help. If one of them is sabotaging it, however, not much can be done. There must be a willingness on both sides to see their contribution to the dysfunction. Anyway, I'd be willing to guess competent therapists don't stay in Indiana. As for the creationism debate, it wouldn't have to be taught within the same course as biology. The school could solve it by having a "religious studies" course taught by a seminarian. Oh, vomit. But I thin that is do-able.

I suppose the phrase "it takes two to tango" is appropriate in most everything that involves two sides--religion, marriage, politics, you name it!
