He felt uncomfortable
With the compliments he received
Especially this time of year
He felt as if he had deceived.
Neither a saint nor hero
He just did his job best he could
A patriot who loved his country
Like every American should.
He fought on the battlefield
He saw death and life
Soldiers dealing with turmoil
Dealing with strife.
Striving to do a job
Fighting against their fellow man
Trying hard to make sense
Trying hard to understand.
Going against teachings
In church they learned
Memories that'll last a lifetime
In their heart and soul will be burned.
He marches down main street
Wearing medals upon his chest
Thankful for those that came home
Saying a silent prayer for the rest.
But he is a hero
And he will always be
Thats why I am here
That is why I live free.
