Saturday Thoughts from the Front Porch
It's a sunny day here in upstate NY, the warmth feels good and it was well worth the wait. I am getting antsy to do some traveling, not any long journey..but just get in the car and travel to somewhere different. You tend to get cooped up in your routine during the winter months here, usually it's go to work and then back home..venturing outside to do some shoveling(for the people who live in this part of the country..Martin excluded)or for the many trips to the local Wal-Mart. Well anyway I am here on my porch watching people(some with dogs)walking by and started thinking about things that I wanted to share. There has been a lot of stories about killing on the news lately, seems more as time goes by. As a parent of 3 children I've noticed the effect that this has had on my oldest..she's 10 years old. She has been asking a lot of questions as of late, mostly why other people kill each other. I can't remember as a child myself being that curious, but then again I can't remember what I did a couple of days ago. It's hard to try to put it in perspective for her, I try to be as sensitive without dismissing her concerns as that I can possibly be. I tell her there are some people that cannot control their anger, and also there are people that are mentally ill and never sought help for their problems. Then I tell here that there are people that have no respect for the sanctity of life, whether they were raised in that type of environment or it developed over a number of years. I give my parents a lot of credit, I never had a full understanding of what a parent was until I became one..and realize how much of parenting is a mixture of on the job training mixed with what you were taught and what you saw as a child growing up. I think in some small way this economy has brought out the worst in some people, pushing people the point where rational thought crosses over to irrational acts. I know that some people have risen to the occasion during these troubled times, I guess that's the other side of the coin here..which makes for good object lessons for my children. With that said I wish all of my fellow bloggers a peaceful and safe Easter, may you find the joy in your heart and share it with your fellow man.
