I saw in the news yesterday where several people were washed off a rock ledge in Maine, they were watching
the waves created from the remnants of Hurricane Bill.
So far 3 have been killed from this tragedy, including
a 7 year old girl. They were at the Acadia National Park,
a place I have visited in the past several times. In fact the last time I was there(Sept 99)Mount Desert Island was
receiving the tail end of Hurricane Floyd. I remember
driving the road that runs along the ocean, marveling at
the sight of the waves, it didn't occur to me to wander
down the rocks to get a closer look. Of course I was with my wife and 10 month old daughter at the time, had I been
by myself who knows?? I don't know what it is about natural
disasters that brings out the stupid in people, I guess I
could see if it was just yourself, but taking children that close into harms path is just plain ignorant. I remember
reading the Bangor newspaper and seeing the damage that
had been done, especially at Sand Beach. The erosion was
so intense that it loped a section of the beach almost as wide as the beach itself. The waves were large and intense, and we made sure we stayed a safe distance away from the action. But this story about these peoples tragedy will not dampen others bravado, for as long as there are natural disasters for people to witness there will be people ignorant enough to want to get a closer look.
