The sun started to rise
On the sleepy small town
The birds were chirping
And the dew was heavy on
on the ground.
All was quiet and still
A typical day in June
Soon the day would begin
The sun would replace the moon.
The flag flew in the breeze
Half mast in the town square
Sadness filled the hearts of many
Showing how much they did care.
People lined the street
Under a sun hot enough to burn
But it didn't matter to those
Who saluted the hero's return.
This scene played out
Across this country
A sacrifice paid
For those of us living free.
For one family it was over
Giving all they had
Sometimes life isn't fair
And in the end that is sad.
