The Devils Last Dance

Dust danced in the air
The sun was so damn hot
Thinking it'd be better
Instead of hanging if he'd
been shot.
Texas justice
Being carried out
Black or white
No gray, no doubt.
He had shot a man
Cold blood, no self defense
And to their thinking
It was a hanging offense.
He had taken her woman
In the middle of a dance
Angry and drunk
Never gave that man a second chance.
He shot him in the back
And he dropped dead to the floor
He thought as that man fell
He wouldn't do that anymore.
But he soon realized
The message he wanted to send
Would be the one
That would cause his life to end.
He sat in that jail
Waiting to be taken away
No words were said
Nothing he could say.
He barely heard the minister
Trying to save his soul
He saw the men in the graveyard
Digging his hole.
He tried to remember his life
Back as a child
He had got into trouble
But nothing too wild.
The sheriff came to his cell
It was his time to go
He wasn't coming back
That's one thing he did know.
He sat upon that horse
Staring at the blue of the sky
Closed his eyes
And said goodbye.
