Baseball This Ain't

It was a dark and overcast day in Cooperstown, NY, and it wasn't only from a weather standpoint. Yesterday the Hall of Fame game between the San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cubs was called on account of rain, and there will be no make up game either. So the final game in the history of Hall of Fame games at Doubleday Field comes to a close,
not in a blaze of glory..but in a sad pathetic whimper. A game that has replaced it's athletes, who possessed not only a true love but a respect for the game which they played. What we were left with was a group of whiney multi millionaires, who are not only less durable then their former counterparts but lack the integrity and ability to play this game. I want to be fair though, I believe if you look hard enough in baseball you will find players with the spirit and ability that embodied the game that was once played. In todays newspaper there was a quote from SD pitcher Jake Peavy lamenting how it was tough for his teammates to "give up" a day off to play in the game at Cooperstown. That remark saddened and angered me all at the same time, not only by showing a selfish attitude but also a lack of respect for the fans who traveled to Cooperstown to witness this event. Also if you want another reason to think Mr. Peavy is an ignorant jerk take this into consideration..there are quite a few men and women serving our country over in the middle east that would rather be anywhere but there. These brave men and women do what has been asked of them time and time again, and for a mere fraction of what the minimum going rate for a MLB player is paid. And for our soldiers there is no off season, no endorsements, no performance bonuses, and..well you get the picture. I would suggest to the Hall of Fame that maybe you could get MLB players to volunteer from all the teams for a game, or former MLB veterans to play a game once a year. Either way a death of a tradition was witnessed in Cooperstown yesterday, I can only hope it was like Mark Twains quote upon hearing of his own death..it was "premature.

I agree with you 100% on this. Today's players, and their ludicrous salaries, have almost turned me off to the game. And the Dodgers ain't never comin' back to Brooklyn...
