I Heard the Bells ...

When life's problems and its sorrows begin to close around me, I remember the poem that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow penned on a Christmas Day long ago, and I think of my two daughters and my three grandchildren.  It is then that I know just how blessed I am.

Bells on Christmas Day

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was filled with sorrow at the tragic death of his wife in a fire in 1861. The Civil War broke out the same year, and it seemed this was an additional punishment. Two years later, Longfellow was again saddened to learn that his own son had been seriously wounded in the Army of the Potomac.

Sitting down to his desk, one Christmas Day, he heard the church bells ringing. It was in this setting that Longfellow wrote these lines:
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep.
"God is not dead, nor doth he sleep!
The wrong shall fail,
The right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men!"

What a timely post. These words are wonderful. I read this many times years ago and reading them today was as if for the first time. Guess words do take on different meanings at different stages of our life.

I think that is so true. Our looking glass reflects different images back to us at different points in our lives.

Thank you for saying so. Those are pictures of each of them their first Christmas. They are growing up so fast now. My grandson is 16, and the two granddaughters are 13 and 7.

Thanks, Kristy. Those pictures are of each of them on their first Christmas. And the song reflects what we all wish for not just at Christmas but throughout the year.

Without a doubt!!!! Well, I must confess my blond grandson does look a tad more like his father. Be prepared for a surprise before Christmas unless the mailman screws it up!!

It is both a joyous and sad post. But the joy for me is in those pictures of my three little angels on their first Christmas. Yes, I also loved Ana's comment, Fredo. Thanks for stopping by.

Perfect timing, my hubby "hears" bells when I walk down the hall? A woman at church on Sun. gave hubby a brass Bell with heather on the top
"Then pealed the bells more loud and deep.
"God is not dead, nor doth he sleep!
The wrong shall fail,
The right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men!"
