Feeding the Habit

Have you ever noticed that the people who REALLY have money most often live the simplest lives?  It's the people who are on the fringe who try to live the lavish lifestyle.
They so want everyone to know just how affluent they are that they carry it to an extreme, often getting themselves so far in debt that they are constantly swimming against the current just trying desperately to keep from drowning.
They will do anything to get more money, including working past retirement age because by now their habit is like heroin;  it HAS to be fed.
The fancy home, with its huge house payment; the luxury automobiles. the summer home at the lake, the ski-doos, the expensive inboard boat, on and on goes the list.
The stress of all that financial responsibility must be enormous.
How can that possibly translate into happiness?

I agree that people who have money don't necessarily spend it on a flashy lifestyle. That's one reason they have money - their priorities are straight and their eye is on the prize.

I live in a boat culture. Everyone on the island is on the water 10-15 minutes to the Gulf. We don't have a boat because it is a money trap and needs constant attention. However we will at some point get kayaks, no rush. I can always rent a couple -- $15 an hour and we can tool around the bay and the mangrove islands. However I have gone out to the Gulf with friends on their boat. It is a special feeling.

Boats are expensive to buy and to maintain. I do like the feeling of skimming across the water in one, though

Maybe that we just want less now that we have grown older. I like my simple life and there are things that are priceless like happiness and worry free living.

To each their own i guess , notice when where out in our little rv camper which would fit inside some bigger ones , the owners of same look down on us , but couldn't care less am enjoying the same lifestyle that they are and a lot cheaper and probably happier knowing its paid for

You should put a sign on it stating that it's paid for!

Luxury automobiles: check!
Summer home: check!
Ski-doos: check!
Expensive inboard boat: check!
Yup, we don't have any of that stuff.

The thing that gets me is the number of people that have to own a boat--and I don't mean a rowboat. If there was a list of 200 "I wants", a boat would be #201. But that's just me.

I am amazed at how many people buy a boat and trailer, yet it sits on their property 365 days a year and you never see it gone!

When I was young, we owned a boat, and my brothers and I spent many a happy hour at the lake water skiing. Our boat was not a fancy, expensive inboard; it was just a basic outboard, but it provided us with all the fun the high-powered boat that can go 70 or 80 mph does.

I led that kind of life in my 39s and 40s--it WAS fun--it wasn't until my mid 50s that I simplified my life by choice and circumstances--do you think one thing has something to do with the other when I realize the less I have, the less 'resposibilities' the fewer choices I have the happier I am--at least in my old age???

As we get older, we don't want all that stress and responsibility. At least, I don't.

I think it is usually the wife who nags at her husband to keep spending, spending, spending. Most men could care less.
