An Amazing Sighting in Northern Michigan

Most of us will never see even one of these; but to spot two together....the rarest of events.  Thank goodness this guy saved it on camera and posted it for us. To see one white moose is extraordinary, but to see two together is the rarest of sightings.

Beautiful Snow Moose - Two Of Them
10-28-09

You probably won't see this again in your life time.
Be sure to show this to you children or grandchildren

These animals were photographed just north of the Wisconsin border on a highway near Marenisco , MI.

Once in awhile, there is an opportunity to take in a piece of nature that you may never see. In these days of unrest and turmoil it is great to see that GOD still produces some wonderful sites.

drous beauty.

The odds of seeing an albino moose are astronomica and to see this in the upper peninsula of Michigan, near W

isconsin, is even greater than astronomical.

To see two of them together is nearly impossible.

I consider them beautiful. I wonder if they are siblings. Whiteness does not seem to be a rarity in domestic animals like dogs and cats. I had a pure white cat with yellow eyes --he could hear. Blue-eyed white cats are deaf.
Thanks for these great pix.

It does seem to be more common in dogs and cats. I did not know that blue-eyed cats were deaf. That doesn't apply to Siamese, does it?

Awesome. Good info on albinoism vs. leucism.

Wow! How neat. I would not know what I was looking at if I saw a white moose.

Now, you will, if you are ever lucky enough to see one!

I get excited about any wildlife pictures, as you know. That second picture: a face only another moose could love, like a really ugly horse.

They are not the most attractive of animals, but to see such a rare creature would have to be the thrill of a lifetime.

I wonder if they are albinos? It has to be recessive gene. Very interesting to me.
comment by elderjane on Apr 26, 2012 5:17 AM ()
It is a recessive gene; however, I think these moose have a condition called leucism. Albinos have pink eyes. These moose do not appear to. The white lions we often seen on TV have this same condition of leucism. Leucism is not albinism, but it is reduced pigmentation. It's what makes animals white or almost. In lions it will be usually white or very pale hair, with dark eyes and some pigmentation, for example ghost markings. Partial leucism is called piebald. Large patterned horses, birds with large areas of color and patches of less or no color. Chinchilla is a mutation that affects the distribution of pigment on the hair shaft. White tigers are chinchilla. Other mutations also cause white animals. Nonetheless, like albinism, two with this condition must mate in order for their offspring to be white or two carrying this recessive gene must mate, in which case the odds of a white offspring would be 1 in 4.

Yes, very rare and the chances of two in one herd are even more rare.

The white ones are what is so rare, and two together is nearly unheard of.
