Why Do They Call it a Blow Job?

I was just talking to the right and left about sex and my friend said “They "promote" heterosexuality.” Meaning they promote heterosexuality in school. Maybe we went to different schools because the only time I remember sexuality being discussed or even addressed was in sex ed class.

Now keep in mind this was somewhere around seventh and ninth grade and the class was held in the game room at our school. I say between seventh and ninth grade because there were people in all of those age groups there. I am not sure how they selected the students to attend these classes but it was both boys and girls about 25 students a class.

This class did not address the mechanics of sex that was done in health class. In health class we discussed where the penis goes what happens what could happen i.e. diseases or pregnancy. Everything was addressed in a clinical fashion and the different types sexual preferences, pregnancy, birth control, and abnormalities you name it from a medical standpoint.

The sex ed class was different. We met in an informal setting with kids on couches, chairs, bean bags and basically had an open forum to ask anything we wanted about sex and ALL the questions were answered. Let me tell you everything under the sun was asked like:

Anal sex and, urm, the dirty stuff (how to deal with it).

Oral sex and farting (Cunnilingus)

If gymnastics will steal your virginity and so on.

Well of course I had to be the one that stumped them.

I asked why do they call a blow job a blow job if you never blow anything. (Wonder if they wondered how I knew that)

Still no one has answered my question.

Can you? I know now as I knew then if you actually bow into it is quite painful ;)

Nice one... thanks. One small quibble... ones sexual orientation is scarcely a preference... there's no choice in the matter. it's as silly as to say "I prefer to be blue eyed"... sorry mate, you're a brown-eye.

I think dkelly probably is on the right track, though I must confess I never really gave it that much thought.

A few months ago the question of the origin of the phrase "blow job" came up. (Best not to inquire how.) I contacted a reference Librarian to help with the search. She found the following as the origin of the term:

Apparently, the term comes from Victorian England. Remember that at that time folks would refer to women of questionable character as "blowsy?" (Think about literature you've read.) Well, "blow" was slang for ejaculate. So, getting a blow job meant creating an ejactuation in the man. Thus, "blow job" is from the masculine perspective of what happens to the man (rather than some odd, ineffective action on the part of the partner). Once again, the masculine bias reigns!

You might want to verify this as, while I trust my reference Librarian, I cannot recall her source.

My school sex education was a tutoring job conducted by Susie McSomething in the back seat of a 1956 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser. I would have flunked the course if she handed out grades.

Why do they call it a blow job.
You are not blowing while performing, did miss something.
Am I suppose to blow and then performed. So confused.
You got some great comments there and some funny one.
Glad that you brought this up.

huh! Maybe it's called a blow job because sometimes giving one just blows...
That or I like dkelly's answer!!!

Christopher Hitchens wrote an excellent ode to the BJ a couple years ago.
'Souffler is the verb "to blow." In its past participle, it can describe a light but delicious dessert that, well, melts on the tongue. It has often been said, slightly suggestively, that "you cannot make a soufflé rise twice."'

Geez... I've often wondered about this. I thought I was finally going to get the answer. Well, not often, maybe, but the question has crossed my mind. I can just picture a nun being asked this question by a seventh-grade boy (no co-ed in Catholic school in those days). No sex-ed either.

You know something? I've often wondered the same thing myself! "Blow" is a misnomer. DON'T BLOW INTO IT unless you really want to hurt the guy!

My first "sex ed" class was when I was attending Catholic school....I have no comment other than that.

in my country (indonesia) sex ed is not taught at schools because it's "not necessary". to me, it's unbelievably stupid and it's nearly the same as saying sex is not necessary. well, they can keep saying that, or they can look around and see the increasing number of unplanned teen pregnancy or STD infection.

as of your little question, , try wikipede-ing it! (i think it says there it's from a victorian slang or sth).
