Sealed ...

Yesterday I flea bombed the three rooms upstairs - my bedroom, spare (bed)room and the art studio. I have my new A/C in the art studio now, so after the six hours I turned on both A/C units to clear the rooms of the stuff still in the air. There was very very little odor, tho.

Today, I am preparing to do the main floor. 4 flea bombs are ready. One each in the kitchen, foyer-dining room, living room and the bath/office rooms. I have been working the prep for two hours now. I put cardboard over all the furnace registers and air returns, put foodstuffs in the refrigerator. Sealed the pantry cabinets, took up what I need to paint for the six hour fogging duration (including a 'wee-wee' can for yours truly. The cats have two litter boxes in the studio. Tape for around the door to seal us in, phones will be there, etc.

I must make a run first to get a few more things.

I have clean cat bowls and water up there. The cats have all been treated on the back of their necks.

After we come out - probably late in the afternoon or early evening, I will have to begin a cleaning spree. Vacuuming, washing things exposed to the poisons, etc. I intend to do the bombing on a weekly basis until we win this battle, or the war, whichever.

Poor cats.

Poor Jon.

But, I get to paint in the A/C for six whole hours! That's a good thing!

I order frontline from pet care rx and it is a little cheaper but I have
done the flea thing too. Once we went on vacation and came back to a
horde of fleas. The county agent told us to sprinkle boric acid everywhere at night and then to vacum it up in the morning. It was horrible.

But that's all the landlords responsibility--we have an exterminator come in the first Friday of every month and if anything goes wrong with a/c he fixes it--what am I missing here?

And as for the fleas, that is my problem, too, because I have cats.

You live in an apartment complex. If I lived in a community like that, my lease would probably be the same as yours and the owners would cover that. But I don't. I rented a whole house. Not an apartment. I am responsible for everything except breakage of pipes, etc, due NOT to my use or neglect. As for the A/C, you probably have central air or each unit may have an A/C as part of the rental agreement. If you rent a house without an A/C, it is your problem. Five years ago I bought a small one for my bedroom. This past week I finally got one for the studio. The rest of the house is hotter than Hades in the summer, but at least with 11 foot ceilings it is almost bearable.

Thanks for the reminder of why I don't have cats anymore!

If you rent why are you buying/putting in a new a/c and exterminating????
comment by greatmartin on July 14, 2011 5:28 PM ()
1. Because I need air conditioning in this 160-year-old Victorian house.
2. Because we have fleas.

All six hours of being sealed in the studio were great. The cats either snoozed in the cool room or stared out a window. I painted the whole time. Then I left them in the room while I came down and cleaned up, started the fans and opened the windows. I let them out but two are still there, enjoying their cooler environment. I washed everything in the kitchen. Not a bad day, after all.

I will repeat the whole process in two or three weeks.

We foolishly called in a professional exterminator in late November and after I had run out of family and friends to hang out with I spent an hour and a half sitting in my car, knitting.

Best wishes for early success.

I thought our pets here in Colorado and Nevada couldn't get fleas because of the dry climate, but a friend in Denver just went through all that to get rid of them, so now I'm looking at the Interstate Cat and hoping it never happens to us.

Fleas are in 49 of the fifty states, all the time.

I know that this is expensive, but use Frontline plus on Buffy and no problems.Something you should looked into?

Couldn't afford it this time.

And that is one of the many reasons I rent and don't own!

I rent this house, too.

I am glad you have the AC to keep ya happy! Fleas are kinda like bedbugs... Pain in the ARSE! I wish you luck!!!

the battle of the fleas is the worse! I wish you luck in ridding the house and cats of the horrible creatures. we once attempted to give our cats a flea bath.

It takes five people to wash a cat. One on each paw and one to clamp the jaw shut.

I'm going to do the cleaning next week when I'm off for vacation. Cleaning, throwing out, taking down old wall paper in the kitchen, etc. Then I fully intend to do nothing but layout by the pool, go to the gym and watch old movies for a couple of weeks! Can't wait!

Please forgive a stupid question, having never had to battle fleas. If your cats never go outdoors, how do the fleas get inside? Did the nits first travel in on Rinny or Quincy when they were first rescued from outside and sheltered in your home? And then a few leaped off from them and took up residence and multiplied? They are not coming in through the windows, are they? Again, please forgive the Duh factor....

Fleas are endemic pests and live in all states but Alaska. They are usually brought inside on shoes, socks, laundry or pant legs. I live on a main street where people walk and poop their dogs. Also, a neighbor dog flies up on my porch if it sees me (I usually run inside.) They all have fleas if they go outside.

What a project! Do your cats go out? How do indoor cats get fleas? Mine probably could pick some up on the pool deck where we have some plants. Good luck with it all.
comment by tealstar on July 14, 2011 5:28 AM ()
Read my reply to Marta. Also, small fleas can enter a dwelling through window screens.
