Funding, Heat, Tomatoes and Cats ...

1. I never got a nickle of government (taxpayer) money for creating my art. That's good. I would not give the government a nickle of mine for funding "nation-building" wars if I had the choice. But I don't have the choice. And that's not good.

2. This hot summer stinks. We are expecting a drop in temperature today or overnight, if the slow cold front ever gets here. I hope it speeds up because it is way overdue and when it comes it will help keep Earl from ravaging the Atlantic coast.

3. I go for three bushels of Roma tomatoes tomorrow. Canning sauces begins Saturday.

4. Three of my furrkids celebrate their birthdays Monday. Satchel will turn ten. Rosie will be nine. Doobie will be four.

It's so rewarding to get done with putting up a big batch of tomato sauce or some other crop. We sent you that cold front from here. Not much, it turns out, but every little bit of coolness helps.

I get mine out of a can which is very lazy but Hunt's roasted garlic suits me.

I would be intimidated by all those tomatoes! I am glad you have kept all your art money. That is good news.
HAppy birthday kitties!!!!

"kept" my art money? Nah. It goes for the rent right away.

Yikes, I haven't canned anything in a long time, but canning isn't as necessary here. Most things are available year 'round. I did make some Mango jam a few years ago. It was great, as was the strawberry.

I am so impressed with all you gourmet cooks and your home-made sauce. The final taste may be special. It's a trade off" taste vs. labor. I buy a good quality sauce, Bertoli or the like, add sauteed mushrooms and onions, and voila! I am not losing sleep over what I may be missing, but I applaud all your industry.

I make and can sauces because it is always available when I make it. I don't have to go shopping for more. I can also depend on the flavors I desire, every time. It doesn't really save much money. It saves pushing a grocery cart. I also use no chemicals or preservatives. The canning process eliminates them.

I used to love making home-made spaghetti sauce. My former father-in-law taught me. He was Italian who insisted no jarred sauce should ever touch his table!

Happy birthday to the kiddies, and have fun canning. The day I left the farm I made a promise to myself never to csn again; so far, I have kept that promise.
