The second part of the work--the outside portion that didn't get done last fall is finally beginning. The crew dropped off two supply trailers on Tuesday evening and began work fist thing--7a.m.--yesterday morning.
Donna chose the color, perhaps a bit lighter than I would have picked, but I like it. The backing that goes under the siding will provide insulation and windbreak for next winter, and the light color will reflect afternoon sun. You can walk out front (west facing) after the sun goes down and feel the heat radiating off the green clapboard that's there now.
I'll have to paint the exposed portions of the windows and the kitchen window (seen in the pic) needs to be re-glazed even tho it had been done after the garage fire two years ago. But this is actually a minor task compared to painting the entire house which I did after I bought it in '03. Some surfaces just don't hold paint well.
The supervisor approves of the work so far, although some times the banging, or a head in a window sets them off. But they doing well with it for the second day. The siding will take a few more days and there is are a few other jobs to be completed--work on the far chimney and "sno guards" all over the metal roof to keep the snow from sliding off all at once and destroying the rain gutters which also need to be installed. So, maybe another week....
My buddy stopped in to check it out on his way past this morning. This is the guy who was treated for bladder cancer due to multiple exposures to agent orange in the 60s. He developed an infection during his stay in the hospital for the first surgery and that delayed the chemo by six weeks while they treated the infection with IV straight to his heart sack. Anyway, I was with him 3 months ago for his last chemo but I forgot when his three-month follow up was. It was Tuesday, and the cancer is back in full force. They'll do the surgery again (through the penis) and chemo. Hopefully no infection this time. I don't know how many times this can be repeated and I didn't have the guts to ask. But it isn't good, especially since he also has prostate cancer which can't be treated until the bladder issue is resolved.
The major incident on the ship when he was exposed in '68 was well documented and although he had to spend numerous hours at paperwork, the service is apparently doing the right thing as far as benefits. Apparently nobody knew at the time how dangerous agent orange was.... nobody except maybe the guys who saw what it could do to a jungle....
Anyway, that news bummed out a good day, but we are all sober guys and have learned to live life on life's terms. So he's planning to help me get the last of the log pile cut. Then I have to order more and cut all summer. I ran out of wood in March and managed to stay a few days ahead of what I needed. Next year I want to be prepared so I don't have to cut in crappy weather.
Donna has been house/pet sitting for the past few days. She'll be home in time for dinner.... Unfortunately she's bringing a grandkid with her, but I guess I can deal... it's only until Saturday....
Happy spring!
