Work Has Begun ... ...

The second part of the work--the outside portion that didn't get done last fall is finally beginning. The crew dropped off two supply trailers on Tuesday evening and began work fist thing--7a.m.--yesterday morning.

Donna chose the color, perhaps a bit lighter than I would have picked, but I like it. The backing that goes under the siding will provide insulation and windbreak for next winter, and the light color will reflect afternoon sun. You can walk out front (west facing) after the sun goes down and feel the heat radiating off the green clapboard that's there now.

I'll have to paint the exposed portions of the windows and the kitchen window (seen in the pic) needs to be re-glazed even tho it had been done after the garage fire two years ago. But this is actually a minor task compared to painting the entire house which I did after I bought it in '03. Some surfaces just don't hold paint well.

The supervisor approves of the work so far, although some times the banging, or a head in a window sets them off. But they doing well with it for the second day. The siding will take a few more days and there is are a few other jobs to be completed--work on the far chimney and "sno guards" all over the metal roof to keep the snow from sliding off all at once and destroying the rain gutters which also need to be installed. So, maybe another week....

My buddy stopped in to check it out on his way past this morning. This is the guy who was treated for bladder cancer due to multiple exposures to agent orange in the 60s. He developed an infection during his stay in the hospital for the first surgery and that delayed the chemo by six weeks while they treated the infection with IV straight to his heart sack. Anyway, I was with him 3 months ago for his last chemo but I forgot when his three-month follow up was. It was Tuesday, and the cancer is back in full force. They'll do the surgery again (through the penis) and chemo. Hopefully no infection this time. I don't know how many times this can be repeated and I didn't have the guts to ask. But it isn't good, especially since he also has prostate cancer which can't be treated until the bladder issue is resolved.

The major incident on the ship when he was exposed in '68 was well documented and although he had to spend numerous hours at paperwork, the service is apparently doing the right thing as far as benefits. Apparently nobody knew at the time how dangerous agent orange was.... nobody except maybe the guys who saw what it could do to a jungle....

Anyway, that news bummed out a good day, but we are all sober guys and have learned to live life on life's terms. So he's planning to help me get the last of the log pile cut. Then I have to order more and cut all summer. I ran out of wood in March and managed to stay a few days ahead of what I needed. Next year I want to be prepared so I don't have to cut in crappy weather.

Donna has been house/pet sitting for the past few days. She'll be home in time for dinner.... Unfortunately she's bringing a grandkid with her, but I guess I can deal... it's only until Saturday....

Happy spring!

I really like the color of the siding. Anxious for a picture when the job is completed. So sorry about your friend, John. Doesn't sound good for the long term; but, as I learned when dealing with cancer, one day at a time. The big picture can overwhelm a person.

He's been sober for almost 25 years, so he'll deal. The job is taking much longer than expected. There is one guy out sick, but even so, they expected to be finished by mid-week and it's Friday with a day or more to go. And the sunny warm weather will be gone by Monday.

Just the thought of prostate or bladder or testicular cancer sends chills up my spine. I went through a colon cancer scare 9 years ago (false, as it turned out), and that was enough for me. Yeah, get that wood cut early. I'm working on winter of '13-'14 already.

One of the guys plans on bringing his saw up after the contractors are gone and blocking what's left of the load on the lawn. I'll have to get more even for next winter, but what's here now will be a good start. I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy on 7 May. I've had polyps removed two of the last three times, but always benign, so I'm not too concerned. I figure I paid my dues with three rounds of pancreatitis in two years.

Sorry your friend is going through all this. Hope things work out for him.
It will be good to get all your renovations done. Post a photo of the finished work, yes?

Yup. The work is taking longer than planned. Fortunately they bid the job. I'd hate to be paying by the hour. I have some painting to do before the job will actually be finished, but it's pretty minor. Just the outside of the inside windows and the exposed portions of the storm windows.

Donna did a good job picking out the siding. I like the color. Be thankful
it isn't inside work. I noticed your open window. Our house stays shut up
all the time because of extremes in temperature.

Not sure which window looks open. None of them are. Today (Saturday) is the first day since the warm spell in March that we broke 60. No open windows yet. We open them in the evening and keep them closed during the day. Works well except during a prolonged heatwave!

Garage is going to look nice when it's done.
Sorry to hear about your friend.

So is the house!

My friend Jerry was diagnosed with bladder cancer Monday--I am so against chemo but that's his decision--and then on Tuesday a friend of mine committed suicide--it's not been a good week.

Work? I've heard of that word--I think about a decade ago or longer--I understand it isn't good for you--is that true?

Work is wonderful *if* you enjoy what you're doing. That's usually the kind of work I do. I'm going to check youtube for bladder cancer after I finish up on mybloggers. There are probably guys who had it removed and documented their case. What is the option to chemo? Removal?

Not a fan of the grandkids? Can you put them to work? That's what my dad does. The siding looks good! I am happy it's getting done.
Super sorry to hear about your friend though. Geez. That's a def downer in your day.

"Not a fan of the grandkids?" Damn grandkids says he! Me thinks the grandpa does more fussing than the grandkids do much of the time.
reply by donnaaa on May 2, 2012 9:12 PM ()
Damn grandkids haven't even been taught to set the table... Then there's the mac'n'cheese/hotdog diet. And the whining and fussing... He was asleep by the time I got home last night and they came at 1pm to get him. No biggy, I was working outside all morning anyway!

My goodness, hearing about someone else's horrible health problems makes me feel lucky. That siding looks very nice, and will make your home so snug.
comment by troutbend on Apr 12, 2012 11:28 AM ()
Yup! I had a call in to the boss yesterday about the soffits and fascia but no callback. Hopefully it will get resolved on Monday. I spoke the Bubby from the first contracting outfit this morning when he came for a ladder that they had left here in December . He said the building code that the siding falls under calls for doing the soffits too!

the place is looking good.Sorry,to hear about your buddy there with his medical issues.HOpe that things get somewhat better there.I loved the image of your dog there.

Looks like my buddy has options if the next surgery and chemo doesn't work. They can remove the bladder and rig up some sort of substitute, so it's far from over!
