Small-town America

I'm posting a video below, but for you folks on dialup, I'll say a bit about what you're missing first.

I was asked by the Coordinator of 4C Camp for Adults to staff the Camp's table at Fair on the Square last evening. Turns out that somebody had volunteered, but more is better, so I stayed since I was there.

Fair on the Square is held every Friday in July from 5 to 9 pm. The Community Chorus sings at 6 and a band plays from 7 til closing. Last night was some kind of Irish band so I didn't mind leaving at 7:30--I had plans. Next week Donna and I are signed up, and I think we get a blues band. I hope the booth is close enough, or that the band plays louder than the Irishmen did yesterday.

If you live or have lived in a small down this will probably look familiar. The volunteer fire department is grilling burgers to raise funds and venders rent their space for 20 buck a night. You have the basic idea by now, sooooo

In other news: We need rain as much as most of the country does. We're not in serious drought yet, just abnormally dry. The water table hasn't gone down much since the hurricane last September, so watering the garden isn't an issue. Unfortunately, the midsection of the country where most of the food is grown is really hurting. Hopefully they will get rain soon too--before it's too late for what's left of the harvest.

I took the camper in for service on Tuesday or Wednesday and it was finally ready today. The shop is right across the street, so the guy parked it in the driveway this morning. Bearings are repacked and he upgraded the hub with a grease fitting. So it's a DIY job for me now. It passed inspection, the tires look good so I'm confident in her roadworthyness now. Hopefully we can get to a real campground before 4C Camp for Adults on 9 August, but even if we only go that far it will be a safe trip.

I have one more afternoon of splitting wood and that will be done finally! Then I have to reglaze the large windows on the house and do a bit of painting and the construction on the exterior will be complete! I should have a month or two of summer left to do what I want.... LOL probably nap on the camper under the FAN-tastic ceiling fan!

Sounds like a plan, huh? Happy summer!

The small town we live in is REALLY small... 350 folks. The dinners in the town park are notable for (a) friendly chatter, (b) tough beef.

Downstate Illinois is anything outside Chicago and suburbs.

It's in "upstate" NY. To most people, upstate means not New York City. It's actually about 130 miles from NYC, cool in the summer, frigid in the winter--the looooong winter, but nice once ya get used to it.

What a nice gathering... the dogs don't need leashes there? MAN I would love your DMV. Ours takes hours... This was a great video. Thanks! Very cute town.

I think the dogs were all on leashes, although I suppose if the pup is well-behaved and stays with its human nobody would say anything. We encourage people to go to DMV instead of doing business online so the gurls can keep their jobs and the office is kept open. The DMV in Oneonta (the larger city around here) is like the DMV in most big cities.

Splitting wood is not my idea of a fun thing to do. Of course, here in Texas, a fireplace is more for ornamental purposes than anything. Two years ago, my kids ordered a rick of wood, and they still haven't used all of it.

My buddy loaned (gave) me a maul and I'm having much too much fun to call it work.

No have no desire to visit my home town any more. All of them are gone.
Love the gathering there and the video.
Nice

I always think of "home" as where I am, not where I came from. Geez... if somebody wants to know where I was born they can ask that question, not "where's home?"

I left NYC for good in 1969 to live in Memphis, now and then going back as a tourist---and haven't been back there since 1985!!
comment by greatmartin on July 14, 2012 7:07 PM ()
I'd go back from time to time while my mother was alive, but she died in '94 and we sold the house in '99 when my third brother who had been living in it left for Vegas. Haven't been back since.

Even though Memphis in the 1970s was on the verge of becoming a big city it still had a small town atmosphere and I saw a lot of firemen grilling food plus as a kid we had a 'summer' home in Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey,so this New York City boy experienced some of the country folk living

I'm also from the City--Queens. I didn't experience any of this until I moved upstate. Left the City in '79.

Thanks for sharing this, including the architectural features of the beautiful brick buildings. Is this near where the Delhi web cam is?
comment by troutbend on July 14, 2012 6:31 PM ()
The webcam is in the upstairs of the County building--the shorter building across the street from the Fair. The courthouse where the video starts is the building and the square where the webcam is pointing.

This is what America is all about. Good people having good times. I
loved the Star Spangled Banner not jazzed up but just sung by people like
you and me.

Yup. I didn't time it like that, but there I was in the middle of a crowd standing at attention and I'm trying to decide whether to stop or keep filming. I did both.
