Fitch's Covered Bridge

We headed out yesterday to harvest some wild leeks. Unfortunately, the field was covered with skunk cabbage, not a leek to be seen. What we were actually looking for are probably ramps, although wild leek is the Delaware county name for it and according to my geezer buddy Adam, that's the way it is and it won't change. So youtube can call'em ramps, but they're wild leeks.

We took the scenic route home so I figured I'd do a quick video of the covered bridge. I don't know how prevalent these things are in other parts of the country, but they are not a common sight even in upstate NY, so I figured this one was worth a video. There's a link below to a site that lists a few more in Delaware County for those of you who dig bridges.

They use to have one in Jay, NY..until it got to a state of disrepair and they ended up removing it. It was alwaays a favorite of mine.

Too bad they don't save things like that... and old barns... we have may beyond repair around here. Fortunately private funds keep the bridges standing although the '06 flood removed one completely up at Plenum.

I've never heard of skunk cabbage before..does it actually stink like one? I'm assuming its inedible. Nice video (bridge is very cool) and song.

Skunk cabbage turned up in a goodle search on webmd. It's more medicinal then edible. It doesn't smell like much in its just picked state, but if one is unwise enough to boil it.... which I wasn't ... maybe I should try it outdoors just to find out how bad it does stink when boiled.

been over a few bridges the last month or so but none covered like this one. one narrow bridge i did cross had go and stop lights each end

I guess the bridges around here don't have enough traffic to justify lights.

I loved all the videos. The covered bridges are so quaint and how fun to
find wild leeks. we have wild onions but not wild leeks. The music was
fantastic.

Music? My playlists? Stevie Nicks and the geezers.... I did add music to the video tho, but that was after I saw your comment.

Thanks. I've been learning how to use the youtube editor. Just added music to this one!

It's nice to see cars using that bridge; it's sad when the roads move away and the bridges lose their function. One time we were driving through upstate New York and people were going along the roadways looking for wild asparagus. It's fun to find something like that in nature, takes us back to days of old.

Hmmm.. I didn't know we had wild asparagus! We don't have enough roads to be closing them. Usually the only time one of these bridges go is when there's a "100-year" flood of which we've had several in my lifetime.

Nice countryside. How far are you from home?
comment by steeve on May 5, 2013 8:30 AM ()
'bout 4 miles. Much shorter as the crow flies, but as they say a lot in these parts... "can't get there from here".

There is just something 'yesterday' about covered bridges--in a good way.

Yesterday indeed. That bridge is older than you. Can't say anything about which is in better shape tho.
