What a Difference a Day Makes

I planted a few butternut seeds last time I opened a squash, and there is the result! Two out of 3 isn't bad at all. It's recommended when planting outside to put at least 3 seeds in each mound just in case they don't all take.

I was really pleased with these so I gave them a bit of houseplant food two days ago.

Short story: I planted a half dozen more seeds this morning.

But at least I know the seeds are viable, which is what I set out to learn in the first place.

Happy Spring (almost)!

I've heard that the seeds you get directly from the fruit is more viable than many you get from the store. Good for you for getting such an early start!

I don't know if it's true or not, but it's logical that the best fruit would produce the best offspring. I'll find out this summer.

Cool. I need to figure out where to start a garden on our property...

Starting from scratch can be a bit of work, especially if you have rock like we have here. Maybe you'll be fortunate and have decent soil. Every year I say "I'm not a @$&*=#$ farmer", but I keep doing it anyway. I especially like the tomatoes. I don't eat store-boughts.

Bummer. We have a very short growing season. They go into October, but even so, if they're not ripe by then they won't make it. They are also my favorite of the squashes. I slice one into a greased casserole and top it with a mix of butter, flour, nutmeg, Cinnamon and brown sugar. There's supposed to be apple slices in there, but I don't miss the apple.

You just can't have too much squash! I love zucchini soup with garlic and
sour cream and nutmeg. Mike told me how to make it when they were here
last summer. Try it if you haven't already.

We did have way too many yellow squash. Gave a bunch away and took 30-something pounds to 4C Camp for Adults. We are on committees and one of the evaluation forms turned in by campers listed under changes for next year: "less squash".

I plan to plant more zucchini this summer. I don't know of a lot to do with them. Usually add them in with they yellow until one escapes and gets 18 inches long. Then it becomes a zucchini boat stuffed with meat and vegetables. I'll look into soup recipes (hopefully one that doesn't use odd ingredients that I don't have).

Yeah, If I could leave well-enough alone plants would do much better.

Is that one of Donna's kitchen herbs?
comment by troutbend on Feb 6, 2013 11:45 AM ()
Well, more like mine, since I do the cooking. As far as I know it's lemon-thyme. Still alive from last summer!

Garden dreams! Thanks for the reminder: I need to start thinking about this summer's vegetable garden.

I bought seeds in Wal-mart today. There was a woman at the same rack I was browsing and between us, we bought all the yellow squash. I hope at this point Wm will be replacing the stock. I'd like to have one more package just to be safe. Between frost or too much rain it's not unusual that we have to replant around here.
