I Live on the Edge (Ok, Not Really)!

Winter in Delaware County sucks. Maybe the skiers can deal with it, but even some of those I know prefer spring skiing to freezing skiing. This winter is much more average than the exceptional lack of snow and cold we experienced last year. Should be about -8 or sow on Wednesday night, which is normal. The coldest three weeks are the last two weeks in January and the first week in February. On the bright side, the sun sets at 5p.m. (and 3 seconds) tomorrow. A full 27 minutes later than on the shortest day in December (which contrary to popular opinion about the shortest day is actually December 11).

Not much of interest has been going on, which is probably why I haven't blogged since my last boring blog on 29 December. Donna's wound is down to 4 centimeters from 11 after surgery, and she should be off the wound vac next Tuesday when she sees the surgeon. Then it's changing dressing twice a day until the thing closes up. Sounds good, although when the visiting nurse had a similar wound after surgery, hers looked healed for two weeks before problems under the skin became apparent and the thing opened. So all is not over yet.

I had to have the chimney sweep come and clean the woodstove after it began backing smoke into the living room. He typically uses an auger from the inside but it still wasn't burning well when he was finished. He attempted a bit of fast-talk about "it will be Ok after it heats up", but I know better. So he came back later in the afternoon and with a bit of help from me, he got on the roof--across the snow--and got the outside of the stack cleaned up. I'll have to get a new cap or this will be a biannual procedure. It was done two years ago by the plumber's helper, but I don't like the idea of guys going on the roof even if they are insured.

As some of the facebookers already know, today marks 30 years since I sobered-up. Really didn't know if I'd live this long. I certainly wouldn't have if I had kept drinking, but my father died at 53 and I only knew one of my grandparents so longevity doesn't run in the family. Hopefully I'll be the one to beat the odds.

Have a lovely mid-winter. I'll check the seasonal section at Wal-mart and if they are starting to stock spring stuff I'll know the worst if over!

Congrats on 30 years of being sober - that must be quite an accomplishment!

I certainly hope you beat your family odds! I think you are on the right track, right? And again, CONGRATS on being sober. It truly is different - I can attest after 6 months sober...

Well, my father died at 53 so I got him beat, I'm almost 60. My neighbor in Phoenicia used to say that he'd live to be 100. He made 62. So... one day at a time....

I am longing for spring but January has just fled by. I really wasn't
ready for another holiday yesterday. I am tired of the bleak landscape
and can hardly wait to see green again. I hope Donna's healing comes
along well. She has had such a rough time of it.

With the nurse coming yesterday, and all the time I spent with the chimney sweep it really didn't feel like a holiday. I'm not even all that impatient waiting for spring. It's the lake-effect snow almost every day that keeps the roads cruddy combined with temps well below freezing that keep me from cleaning the vehicles. Today at least is sunny, but 13 will be the high for the day with a low tomorrow night around -10. But fortunately the coldest weeks will be over in 20 days or so. Would be nice if the Great Lakes would freeze early one year. That stops the lake effect snow.

Congratulations on your 30th! Glad Donna's healing over. Hopefully she'll continue without any further difficulty.

This time we have to watch it more closely. Could have probably save a lot of this healing if we had done something sooner. By the time she had me look at it it was infected and we shot down to the ER. I've been taking a picture of it every time the nurse comes to repack it. I'm thinking the worst is over.

Good to hear donna is coming good , it takes time to heal up and here's hoping it doesnt break out again. Nothing like walmart in aussie if you want building products you go to hardware store, though Bunnings do have a garden centre , but for anything in the garden there are a lot of full blown garden centres, same for anything else there are the shops that specialize in different things, which in a way is good for employment.
its the same here , clothing for instance where summer clothes get displayed as winter finishes

I support local businesses whenever possible. Even my cable in internet come from Delhi Telephone Company--in business since 1897--can't get more local than that. But I have to get good prices too. Even the local grocery (Price Chopper) is a northeaster chain. So might as well get twice the groceries for the buck and go to Walmart for the things Aldi's doesn't carry.

sounds like it's been a long recovery for Donna! hopefully she will have no further problems. I was in walmart today and they had all the spring clothes out. and we are actually having a cold winter here!

Yeah, Donna's first surgery was 17 October. I rarely buy clothes at Walmart, but I do buy seeds there and I know they sell out early and aren't restocked.

PS The Dollar Tree store has St. Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day and Easter stock out for sale AND packets of flower and vegetable seeds for sale!! Hang in there--winter is almost over BUT STAY OUT OF WAL-MART!!!!
comment by greatmartin on Jan 21, 2013 1:03 PM ()
If Aldi's carried more products I'd stay out of Walmart. Aldi's prices are better on what they do sell, but there are still thing I can't get there.

I didn't really understand the comment you left on my blog about my having stopped drinking January 21, 1981--so if I understand you here we are both celebrating January 21 once again sober--30 years for you, 32 for me (but then I am older than you!)
comment by greatmartin on Jan 21, 2013 1:01 PM ()
Long story short: I was trying to say that I celebrate 21 Jan as the first day I didn't drink. I could celebrate 20 Jan as the last day I did drink, but I go for the positive.

I can't do that--with my hand. The last two fingers stay apart. I'd need tape, but Donna can do it just-like-that with either hand.

I give up.

While the rest of the shops are stocking red, heart shaped boxes of chocolates, Staples has a bin of Cadbury's Easter Cream Eggs.

Guess I'll be surprised at what I find in Walmart. I know seeds come early. By the time planting season comes around they are no longer selling seeds. Gotta stock up early.
