Sunday in the Er

I spent 4 hours in the ER with my Grandma yesterday - she had a severe skin infection which had traveled from both forearms, across her chest, up on her neck, and across half of her face. It left her skin bright red, raw, and horribly itchy - to the point where she had open wounds where flesh once was! My parents are out of town until tomorrow so I had to make a quick decision. I mean her forearms were literally twice their normal size. She didn't want to go to the ER, she kept telling me 'it'll go away' and 'baby oil will help' (that's her cure for everything), but I knew whatever was going on with her skin was super serious.

So we arrived at the ER and while we sat in an exam room - a woman collected a lot of blood samples, 2 blood cultures, and a mouth swab. I think they were checking to see if she had a bacterial or viral infection, but all the tests were negative. The doctor sent us home with an antibiotic prescription and also one for a steroid, which he said would clear up her severe skin infection. He said the steroid might even help relieve some of her arthritic pain in her wrists, but it would probably only be a temporary positive side effect.

She had been freezing for 4 hours at the ER - why do they have to keep those exam rooms so cold! The nurse was very nice and brought her 2 blankets and a warming pad to put against her. I felt so bad for her. She wanted to itch, but the nurses wouldn't allow it. It's difficult sometimes with her advanced dementia to read her at times, but I could tell she was really miserable with all the horrible itching she was experiencing.

When I got her back to her Senior apartment, I gave her the first dose of her medications, and had her climb into bed. I'm glad my parents will be returning tomorrow - that was very scary and stressful. Hopefully her skin infection will clear up quickly and she'll be back to her old self again.

++++++

I wasn't able to help my brother-in-law paint the baby's room on Saturday because my parents had to leave town to attend a funeral, but we'll try for next Saturday.

++++++
Classes begin on Wednesday. I know I've mentioned this a ton of times, but it's so close now. I'm anxious and excited and SO ready for the semester to be here!

At first I thought maybe she had cellulitis, which is a very serious skin infection. But if the tests were negative for bacteria, maybe it was an allergic reaction to something. The steroids will stop the reaction unless it's something she is in contact with a lot - meds or laundry soap etc. Did they say to follow up with her own doc? You did the right thing to take her. My mother has Alzheimer's and never wants to go to the ER but she's not the best judge of her needs anymore. It sounds like your grandma needs help with those decisions too.

What a great grandson you are! I think that's awesome. Sounds like it was trying for all involved, but good job and way to see it through.

Thanks!
Her itching has lessened a lot, so that's a good thing. I saw her today - she looks a lot better than she did on Sunday, even laughed a little. Her forearms are still a little swollen, but doesn't look bad at all.

Your a great grandson to do what you did--top marks---the steroids will do the trick, my son had the same thing rash everywhere was put on steroids 2 weeks back and has vastly improved

Thanks
That's good to know that the steroid's are helping your son - does it usually take 2 weeks to work? It's only been a couple days since she's been on it...just curious. Did they ever find out what kind of infection/rash it was?

It is so great that you were able to be there for her. A lot of us can be pretty stubborn about getting medical attention when it is needed. I am sure she was more relaxed because you went to the ER with her. It sounds like it is good that she went in for treatment.

Thanks, Aaron.
I'm glad they let me stay with her. Everyone was so nice and made her feel as comfortable as possible, even though she complained a little about being so cold and wanting to itch.

Can't let something like that go unattended. Those sort of things don't usually just go away on their own.

That's exactly what I thought, too.

OMG!!! My mind is blank--it sounds like a rash you get from nerves--they recently (past 2 years) came out with a vaccine that everyone should take after the age of 60--oh yes Shingles--was that ever brought up?
Right now I am furious with my podiatrist--the tendinitis in my right ankle is 'killing'me and he is booked solid today and tomorrow--his receptionist called me back and told me what to do--turns out it is what I have been doing for the past 3 days and didn't help ARGH!!!!! I could never be a masochist--I HATE PAIN!
Hope your grandmother does okay!

Thanks
I hope your ankle is feeling better..tendonitis is no fun, my mom gets it in her elbow from playing tennis.

My drug plan covered the shingles vaccine--good thing, since it listed at $469. Not until I read the papers after the injection did I find out that it's only 50% effective. It may make the condition less sever in the other 50%, but for that price I'd like to see 99%.

She would have scratched and scratched if left on her own. I can imagine how hard it was to decide what to do, especially since she was saying she didn't want to go. You did the right thing.
