Bugg Hero of the Century

'

"Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the Mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody I would like to live. A long life, longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. And I'm happy tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mamphis Tennesee
April 3, 1968

Today is the 40th anniversary of the assasination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The quote above is the last speech he would ever give. That night, he hadn't planned on giving a formal speech but he was asked to say a few words and without any advance preparation, he just gave this inspiring and hauntingly prophetic address. This speech was given on the last night of his life. Every time I hear it I can't help but think to myself in frightened awe.."he knew...he friggin' KNEW he was gonna die." Because of this man, America has gone a long way to live up to its promise to its citizens of African descent. He lived with the fear of death each day but he continued to strive to right injustice. Dr. King was only 39 years old when he was murdered. He left behind a wife and four small children and the hopes and dreams of millions of black people who thirsted for freedom and justice. The world is a better place because he lived. I ask you all to take a moment today and reflect upon this man and his legacy. He was truely a hero for the century.

As I as reading the excerpt above, I also thought that he had a premonition of his own death. It is almost a goodby, isn't it.

Moving tribute, cuz, to a man who believed that he could get his people to The Promised Land without resorting to the tactics long used against his people. He did an awfully lot to advance the agenda for people of color.

Some day I'll tell you about my dad meeting him many years ago while flying. Get two preachers together for a few hours in an airplane and they had a time. They even mixed up their identical topcoats. I remember my dad being so impressed with Dr. King.
