A Rant with Questions!! :O)

I went to my dentist yesterday to have my 1 of 2 'free' insurance cleanings--the last time they charged me for a 'deep' cleaning and I questioned it and told them I saw no difference than a regular cleaning but I went ahead and paid it.

I had an appointment in June--got there on time--they were completely shut down but never called me to cancel the appointment.
Okay, it is a crazy time so I didn't make a big deal of it and came for the new appointment, got my teeth cleaned, no big deal and as I was leaving, going out the door, I was told that I had to stop at the desk and I was told I owed $45 for the cleaning and I asked, "Why?" and the answer I got was "He irrigated and cleaned the teeth," and I brought up that I don't ever recall getting my teeth cleaned without getting some irrigation and I mentioned the previous 'over-charge'.
She said she could discount the irrigation charge but she would have to charge me $15 for---didn't get the words quite right--'virus protection'! My receipt has nothing down about what the charge is for!!

I have heard about restaurants adding some sort of virus charge but this was the first time I was hit with 'it'--no signs around about the charge was not told about the charge, etc.
Is this some sort of scam? Are all dentists charging this?
Adding insult to injury I received an email when I got home and they asked me to add any comments I had so I sent this to them--still waiting for a response!

"Why aren’t there signs about the $15 “Virus Protection” charge?

Why wasn’t I informed about the charge beforehand?

Why isn’t the charge stated as such on my receipt?

I get 2 ‘free’ cleanings a year under my insurance plan—so far I have had 2 cleaning appointments—both not ‘free’—and I was not informed of the extra charges when I went in for an appointment.

Why do I leave the office with a ‘sour taste’ in my mouth, feeling as if I have been ripped off?"

Waiting for their reply, which I expect to be a non-answer!!

End of rant--ah, I feel better!!

Martin, I sell those insurance plans (and Florida has gobs of them). I encourage my clients to ask before receiving treatment, "Here is my insurance card. What will this visit cost me?" They may even say, "I only want the $0 copay service included in my plan. Tell me what they cost before completing any additional services." It's called a plan of care and everyone has a right to know up front what their visit is going to cost BEFORE the services are provided. It's your right and I get so upset when I hear stories like this one. Don't back down. They and the insurance company are making millions. YOU are not.

Actually it is the first time in at least 10 years that I had any cost problems--and this is a new dental firm for me--won't happen again!

Glad you got a credit. It pays to protest.

If they had ben open with me I wouldn't have said a thing and just had my teeth cleaned!!

I agree that they seem to be trying to catch up on a missed opportunity to charge you extra. In general, though, I'm not sure I'm against dentists adding a charge now; anyone who hangs over your face for extended periods had better be taking added precautions and added sanitizing of their offices. In fact, I'd want them to outline just what their added costs are going towards. The respirator plastic masks the doctor needs are not that much, generally, but add in the use of products to sanitize the entire area after every patient and it might add up. These may include added UV lights for nighttime sanitizing. If they want to charge it, they should explain it. By the way, your teeth look great.

My main objection was not being told in advance about the 'virus protection' charge or have a sign about it!! I still would have had my teeth cleaned--now the $30 charge for 'irrigation'? I never had a teeth cleaning with out irrigation and the first time when they charged me for a 'deep clean' I couldn't tell the difference!!
See my response to 'traveltales'!

Sounds like bait and switch - they get you in there for a 'free' service but then add stuff without asking you, and then it's been done, so you feel like you have to pay for it. That $15 charge reminds me of the trash companies adding a 'fuel surcharge' when the price of gas goes up, but when it came down, they don't remove the charge.

Also, dentist offices traditionally have taken anti-virus precautions, so there should be nothing extra they had to do now.

See my reply to drmaus plus--They did take off the $30 charge plus someone from the main office called me today and agreed that they should have informed me about the $15 charge so she gave me a credit--might pay for it for the next time? (When I go for my 'free' cleaning?)
She said she would talk to the manager of that office about telling the patients about what the costs WILL be and if anything comes up during the procedure that will cost extra they should tell the patient!
